Good Afternoon,
My fiance and I are looking for a long term rental towards the east end of STX. We're very clean, quiet, respectful, non-smokers and work very hard. We're trying to find a place that would work for our dogs, they're more like our children than our pets and are very well behaved mostly indoor dogs and NON-destructive animals. We're very excited about re-locating here and now that it's finally become a reality we're ready to get to started and settled in. We've been down several times and are ready for a much needed climate change!
We've just finished the complete renovation of a historically registered 1898 Victorian Cottage in Colorado by ourselves and both have worked professionally in the landscaping industry for many years. Needless to say we're VERY handy and have great knowledge in the areas of construction and property management. That being said, we're hoping to find a cottage or rental property that would allow us to be care takers of a main house or landscape while the owners were away or living on island in addition to our rent. We have local references we would could supply, would love to meet in person and would be more than appreciative of any advice anyone has for us. Thanks for all the help!

When are you planning to move to STX? What kind of dogs do you have? Based on my experience, and having lived on island for almost 11 yrs., housesitting/caretaking positions are usually "word of mouth" and given to established STX residents who are either friends of the owners or have friends that are friends of the owners. Having 2 dogs might be a problem for you to obtain such a position. State side references are good to have, but local references are better. Just my opinion.

Well I'm already on island and my fiance is coming down soon. We've got a yellow labrador and english bulldogs:) Thanks for your advice, I've met a great couple that offered their place, had it of not been rented already. 🙁 I was under the same impression about such opportunities being word of mouth and no real need to be advertised. If you know of anything, we'd be greatly appreciative! Thanks

Although this site is fantastic, there are, believe it or not, people who don't use it! 🙂 Some of them happen to live in nice homes with rentals available, as I discovered when I picked up a copy of the Avis a couple of months ago when I was looking for a new place. So try that... I saw several in there that would have been fine for me and just happened to stick with the first one I called. I don't think you'll have much luck with the caretaker thing, but you can probably find something that's reasonably priced and in a nice area.

I agree, caretaking with dogs probably won't fly, even if you could find something.

Have a 3/2 on east end that will take dogs - rent is $2500 per month - or $2200 per month if you take care of pool. Has great Buck Island View. If you'd consider west end - have a great 2/2 with fabulous view - 5 minutes from beach - safe, pet friendly, pool, for $2200 a month. Might be less if you'd do landscaping, pool care.
