Petra,
Have you looked on vi craigslist? There are quite a few listed there. Not sure of your budget or where on island you want to be but that would be the best place to start, I think.

The usual caveat - don't take anything sight unseen. Find a temp place for a couple of weeks until you find your way around and decide which area best suits you. Ronnie at Crystal Palace above town sometimes has space for people such as yourself and is a pet-friendly host!
