Which island?
You can check local daily newspapers when you arrive, there's a weekly classified paper that comes out on STT and STX, (Island Trader and Cruzan Trader) and you can check on Craig's List. http://virgin.craigslist.org/
Don't buy or rent anything sight unseen.
Craig's List tends to have some scam ads, especially for cars and rentals.
If buying a car, be sure to have a reliable mechanic check it out prior to purchase if buying from individual.

Also, if you're on Facebook, STX has multiple "yard sale" sites. I'm sure STT does too.
