STX housing before 1/1/07
I'm starting work on STX the first week of January, 2007. I need a one bedroom, furnished, long-term lease. Looking for the same trappings that most desire (safety, cleanliness, a view, internet access or availability, cable, drinkable water, etc.) I'd like to stay under $1000 a month, or thereabouts, if possible. Would consider more if appropriate. My email is schura89@hotmail.com. Name is Rich
nobody has any advice for me???? seems like housing is a major pain in the butt down there.
No, housing is not a "pain in the butt". But, as has been said many times, it is also not as standardized as in the states. Many apartments, especially the less expensive ones are in peoples homes. Many are discovered by word of mouth and in order to find such housing -- you have to be here.
Find temp housing, Villa Fairview is often mentioned, for a week or two and do your permanent housing search when you get here. Do NOT committ your $$$ to an apartment you haven't seen.
Good luck.

I have some ideas. Tell us more about you though.
The problem with that suggestion is that Villa Fairview is on STT and the request is for housing on STX.
The rental market is getting tighter each passing day at this time of the year. I get dozens of emails each week requesting low priced rentals, but those aren't typically handled by property managers, so you really do need to be on the island and looking around in person to have the chance to hear about something through word of mouth.
So it was. I must have been dozing!! lol.
Thanks for the responses. I understand that it would be easier to find housing while on STX, however, I would at least like to do what I can from afar. Besides, I don't even have a "short term" plan for when I arrive in terms of where I'll stay. I suppose I could stay in a hotel, but that is pretty expensive. When I came down to interview I stayed at the Best Western in Christainsted, and I would like to avoid doing that again. I also do understand that many housing situations involve living below or adjacent to the house proper. I'm fine with that.
For Linda in Michigan -- I'm a single guy, attorney, under 30, ultra clean freak (hence need for clean space), and I'll be working at a firm in Christiansted. The firm is graciously keeping their eyes open for a place for me, so that helps. I am unsure, but I believe somebody from the firm would be willing to take a look at any place that might be a fit for me.
