Possible Move to STX

Good afternoon All,
I may have an opportunity to move to STX for an employment opportunity. I will probably know for sure after the weekend. I have read many threads that say the attrition rate for newbie's, continentals, whatever you want to call it, is very high. I have always loved the ocean and am a diver/snorkeler/fisherman and my wife is very outdoorsy as well.
I would most likely move down first, and begin working, as well as looking for a house. My wife would come down later after our place here is sold, along with our two daschunds and two cats.
I would ship my vehicle down with me, as I think the cost benefit is much better than buying something on the island and having car payments again.
Any insights, tips, advice is welcome.
Thanks all

Have you visited to check out the living and working situation? Unless you were planning on selling your stateside home anyway, I can only echo what's been repeated many many times before. Don't burn your bridges. Don't ship your car right away. Rent for at least a year before making any longterm decisions. The draw of the seemingly idyllic ocean and outdoor life in a beautiful climate is strong but, yes, the attrition rate of newbies is huge. Good luck!

PS: You've posted on the classified forum. Go to the General/Relocating forum (see "forum list" top left) and read all the information available in the drop-down menus top of the page. Then read the hundreds of relevant posts on that forum, change the search to "all".

I have 3 tenants leaving island within the month. All have been on island less than a year. One really dislikes the island, one has medical issues to take care of, and the other didn't really say why, but he has been planning his return to the states for a while.

I have been renting to newcomers for quite a while. The ones with a job, and a car, tend to stay much longer, if not for many years. Without those two things, it can be even harder to assimilate to island living, harder to make friends, get around the island and start to feel like you fit in.

So, with a job lined up and a car (either shipped or bought on island), you already have a head start.

When looking for a place to live, it will be harder with 4 pets to find rentals. Your coming first to look is a good idea. I agree about not buying when you first arrive. There are exceptions to that, for instance....you are under contract to be here for several years, or something like that.

Just a thought. You may already be aware, you can't fly pets in cargo during the hot months, and a passenger can only have one carry on pet, so put that info into your planning.

If the job works out, and I can help with a short term apartment, please PM me.

Good luck to you!

If they are small enough, you may be able to fly with 2 in cabin.
Check with Airline.
