I will be Traveling to St.John , on 5/29 and hosting a birthday party for my good friend at a rented villa.

I have only visited st Thomas once and I'm not familiar with the area. I need about 60 balloons blown up with helium , and lard floaties blown up as well.

I am willing to pay 100$ + cost of balloons if you can complete this simple task for me and deliver to St. John or meet us at the ferry on st Thomas when we arrive.

Please do not release the helium balloons into the environment.
They are extremely harmful to marine life which is already under severe threat.
If you must have balloons, dispose of responsibly.

I third it. While you may not be planning to release them, it's windy here and accidents happen. It's sad how many we pick up on the beaches.

PrettyTourist, doesn't look like you're going to get much help here other than a lecture on balloon disposal but what you might do is contact some of the wedding coordinators on St John and see if one of them knows someone who might be able to help. Google "wedding planners st john usvi" and you'll find lots of them. Good luck with the party!

I will continue to do everything I can to discourage balloons until I no longer have to fish them out of the surf on a routine basis, and until they stop being found in abundance in the stomachs of animals, who mistake them food. Lots of people are simply unaware of the great amount of harm that they cause. Even when used indoors, someone usually ends up taking at least one out that gets away. And even when disposed of in our dumpsters, they have a way of "escaping".

You can find alternatives on this site:

"so I went to a virgin islands website enquiring about some balloons for a friend's party and I was talked down to and lectured... So nice, soooo niiiiice, Virgin Islands nice" I will be purchasing my own helium tank at cost u less for my son's birthday. I will let you know the date so if you want to come shame me for my decisions you can do it in person.

Many people are unaware and ignorant of the fact that released balloons are incredibly harmful to marine life, especially turtles who are in breeding season right now and once made aware, they choose to do the right and responsible thing.

None of us said, "Dont have balloons." What was said was if you must have balloons, be responsible for their proper disposal in an effort not to harm the environment and already threatened, in some cases, endangered marine species.

Same goes for you, sparty.
I find your response childish and petulant.

Seriously, Alana, the chastising was presented like a feisty schoolmistress lecturing a 5 year old. How much more pleasant and welcoming would it be to just give an answer to the question (if you have one) and then gently suggest an alternative to using balloons?

Such an authoritarian and dictatorial stance is very off-putting. Very Trumpish.

I have been lectured now about balloons, plastic bags and straws, with calls for banning things for the two latter ones. I laugh every time and say Ban All The Things!!! The self righteousness is a bit overwhelming. Everyone knows what is best for everyone else and have zero qualms in telling them. I'm still waiting on the post from all these who care so dearly for the environment advocating the mass executions of feral cats. Since as any good environmentalist knows they have single handledly wiped out dozens of species so obviously the answer is to ban them.

So, as a reality check, nearly everyone who has posted except the OP has often gotten condescending and authoritarian, on more than one occasion, about issues they care about. It's hypocritical to throw stones when you live in a glass house.

It's been over 30 years since the damage from balloons, plastic straws and bags (and Styrofoam, you forgot Styrofoam!) has been demonstrated. I first heard about balloon damage in the early 80's when my Big 10 college banned their mass release at their football games. Thought it was ridiculous and it took me another few years to stop using them - I had a toddler, after all, and everyone knows a perfect childhood isn't complete without balloons. But quality of life did not change for her or me once we stopped using them. Even the evil Sea World had banned plastic straws from their park in Florida before we visited 25 years ago. And yet, here I am today, spending time EVERY SINGLE WEEK picking all of that up, and more, off of our beaches and roads by the contractor bags full. So yeah, I get a little worked up over it.

Alana, I did advocate not using them at all. But at the very least, would hope that they would be more careful with disposal after reading, should they be used.

Sparty, I've noticed your comments have been unusually trollish and strawmanish lately. I'll refrain from feeding you, in hopes that your indigestion eases off.

As is yours, OT.

If sparty wants to respond like a 5 year old, then he can expect to be treated as such. He has been exceedingly gaseous of late.

No. I realized it wasn't gas after all. It's the level of sanctimony, that I guess I attribute to being in a small community, that eats at my very soul. Everyone wants to tell everyone else the best way to live their lives. Here's the deal. My boy likes balloons and straws. I will keep using them with or without the condescending do gooder preachy nonsense. I do not need to be told, with every decision I make, the positive and negative results. I'm a grown man and I've thought out pretty much each decision I make. The fun police and self righteous folks have just been under my skin lately. If the OP wants balloons, the appropriate answer would be, "you can get them here, but we have a serious Pollution problem in the Caribbean." there was no offer or suggestions other than to basically tell someone they are making the wrong decision. If people want to tell others how to live I suggest adopting a child. They are perfect for instilling ideology and barking orders at. Be careful though, the sanctimommies are strong here on island.

Have a blessed day all.

Seriously stick it, Joan. You have no clue how eco-conscious I am or what I do every single day to not only protect but improve the environment. Unlike some others I don't sit in font of a screen cutting and pasting pseudo-scientific articles and signing petitions - I live it.

The whole point I was making and which obviously went right over your head is that this first-time poster asked a very simple question and was thoroughly trounced for daring to even think of having balloons at a party. As I said before (and if you can't understand it then there's no hope at all), "How much more pleasant and welcoming would it be to just give an answer to the question (if you have one) and then gently suggest an alternative to using balloons? "

So, again, simply stick it. I fully understand that you resent not only the way I write and express myself but take delight in leaping onto every syllable. Have your fun but I take real exception to your even suggesting that I in any way contribute to the destruction of the environment. There - you actually got a rise out of me. Well done!

No rest for the wicked. I'm just continually amazed at how well people here have all their own personal crap together, that they have time to make sure everyone else gets their's together too. I can't wait for coat tails Joan to swoop in for another groundbreaking sanctimonious post. Alana, I actually can handle your sanctimony. You are consistent. I can deal with that. Coat tails though is all over the board.

LOL! Hilariously ironic! I rest my hypocrisy case. But I have learned my lesson. From now on, I will submit all my posts to OT for review before posting, to ensure they are written just the way she wants them to be. Mea Culpa, for that past oversight.

Just wait for a nice southerly breeze and write it on a balloon and let it go.

As far as I'm concerned both OT and sparty can "stick it" as I'm pretty sick of their BS.
