Looking for convertible vehicle for recreational purposes for 6 months

Will be locating down to STX shortly and will be there for 6-9 months. Transportation to work is not an issue, however I would like a vehicle for recreation purposes. Want to spend $5-6K including any initial repairs it may take to get up to working condition. Appearance is not important, would like to have 4wd, pretty much just want an island vehicle to toll around on weekends when the weather is nice. Only requirements are no roof, and must be street legal.

I'm not a professional mechanic, but I'm proficient enough to do intermediate level repairs (really tool availability is my only limiting factor) and can inspect a vehicle thoroughly enough to recognize a lemon.

What is the availability of beater wranglers or other vehicles that can go topless? The car dealerships appear to be focused on late model vehicles for regular commuting.
