Looking 4 an apartment in STT
I'm moving to St Thomas this weekend and am looking for a 1 BR apartment to rent for the next year near Domini Gade in Charlotte Amalie. Does anybody know of any places that aren't too expensive? Thanks.
Hey Kevin,
Not sure where that is but I guess it will be in town around Garden Street...not my favorite place to live...I hope you know that area and that you are sure you want to live there.
Your best bet is to wait until Thursday for the Island trader (free local newspaper with lots of ads) to come out.
You can watch the Island Trader online (mostly its on the net the first day its comes out).
Go to http://classified.virginislandsdailynews.com/ for the ads of the daily news paper (the regular daily paper)and scroll down and you will see the link for the Island trader on your left. You can still see the paper from last week on there, maybe you are lucky to find something in there.
I would suggest if you see anything in there you like, call them to make an appointment for the weekend!
Good luck and welcome to STT!
Inge
Hey Inge,
Thanks for the advice. I've never been to Charlotte Amalie, but I've got a job lined up near Domini Gade and Garden Street. What's wrong with that area? Is there a lot of crime there or something?
Thanks,
Kevin
Dear Kevin,
The area in which you're going to be working is not considered safe after dark, and is generally not recommended as a residential option for newcomers.
The majority of those who work downtown do not live there but commute into work every day. Thus, as has been discussed many times on this forum, the necessity of the wherewithal to have a car or, as a second option, live somewhere on the Vitran bus line.
Where are you staying upon your arrival? Your best bet would be to contact Ronnie at Villa Fairview to see if he has anything avalable which would suit your needs temporarily until you find your way around. (Look for one of his many postings on this forum and PM him.) He has an excellent reputation for accomodating and taking care of newcomers and will steer you in the right direction.
Has your employer not been able to give you any help?
Hope this answers your questions and helps!
Will you be teaching at All Saints Cathedral School? There are apartments in the general area, if you are looking for something within walking distance. Definitely contact Ronnie, who has his finger on the pulse of the historic district.
I am teaching at All Saints. They said they would pay for my first night at some guest house and that the owner of the guest house would help me find a place, but I don't know any details, so that's why I'm asking around. I already emailed Ronnie and he said he had a room available for me, so I'll probably stay there at least temporarily. Thanks for the recommendation though, at least I know now that he's a good guy.
I highly doubt that I will get a car there, so that's why I'd like to be in walking distance of the school or at least on the bus line. Are there many apartments within walking distance that are in decent areas or do you think I should focus more on finding an apartment on the bus line?
Kevin: The best thing to do is to stay in the guest house for a bit until you get your bearings. Yes, there are apartments in the town area. You will want to look around. There isn't much parking in town (or at All Saints!) so not having a car is a good thing in a sense! Anyway, if you are coming this weekend, you will have it figured out pretty quickly. Good luck and let us hear how you are settling in.
Kevin,
I am applying to All Saints Cathedral School and I noticed that you are currently teaching at All Saints. Could you possibly give me any pointers on what the school is like? What grade do you teach? Do you enjoy teaching there? Do you enjoy living in St. T??? 🙂
Well, that was September '05 when Kevin posted "post-haste" as it were. So, does anyone know if he reached/stayed?
Actually it was 2006.
Kevin made it and is doing fine, he is a great addition to the neighborhood. All Saints hires lots of its teachers from the states, especially at the middle and high school levels, and can be a good option for those seeking to relocate. They do their recruiting later than other schools though, so don't be discouraged if you don't get an immediate call back. Just call the school yourself and check in from time to time after you send in your application.
Thanks for the info Sttarfish! I am finishing up my senior year (student teaching) and I am highly interested in relocating after I graduate. I think it would be a great experience to be able to teach in the Virgin Islands! Next, I will need moving information! 🙂
