Housing wanted
Husband and I are interested in relocating to the VI, St. Thomas specifically. What are good neighborhoods vs. bad? Would love to rent long term, need washer and dryer in a unit. Also need a place that allows small dogs.
Any help appreciated, thanks!
Good morning Sara. How familiar are you already with St. Thomas? In terms of good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods, it's not so easily defined - in my opinion you'll need to spend some considerable time driving around and taking a look for your self. Especially for when you are just moving to the island, I'd concentrate on living on the same side that you will be working on. Do you and your spouse have jobs lined up yet, or do you have a lot of money saved up and plan to just figure it out when you get here?
Having a dog might exclude 70-80% of units, so in a sense it makes your search easier, as you have less to look at 😉
You can do a lot of searching online of course, and look at pictures, but I would not sign a lease anywhere you haven't personally gone to visit (the particular unit you're renting), and checked out its proximity (or non-proximity) to where at least one of you plan to work. You didn't move to a tropical island to have a 45 minute communte to work after all! 😉
Hi, thanks for the info!
My husband has interviews lined up, all in Charlotte Amalie. I'm still looking for something.
Yes the dog creates the main issue, but I can't leave without him!! He's 15 lbs, housetrained, and only barks if someone knocks on the door.
Good advice on the commute. We have about a 30 min commute now, so anything even close to that wouldn't be that weird!! How long have you lived on the island? I've done a lot of Craigslist searching for apartments and rentals, but still leary of a couple of offers I've been given.
I'm trying not to stress until we my husband has a for-sure job opportunity lined up 🙂 Then we can dig in.
Any other advice appreciated!
Thanks 🙂

If your husband gets the job, won't they assist you guys with relocation? Most companies that recruit off-island do.

That's the hope, yes!
Good luck with finding a place that will allow pets. I would recommend looking at Craigslist and also the Island Trader, which are both on line and will give you an idea of what the rental picture looks like. There are quite a few properties that have been listed for a long time because of the housing bubble in the islands has burst. So even though you see a place that you like, but the ad says no pets, always ask because some landlords are willing to negotiate especially the owners, property managers not so much.
I would highly recommend the North side of St. Thomas, it's quiet, has cool breezes most of the time so A/C isn't needed most of the time. It's one of the safest areas on the Island. Have you been to St. Thomas before? Have you done a pre-move visit?
