I am fostering a wire haired terrier for the Humane Society until they can find him a good home. He is 2 y/o, neutered, up to date shots and heartworm and has a very good temperament.

Does well in cars and is great with other dogs. (I know becaues I have a dog and they are getting along great!) And, of course, he is housebroken. I am testing out his love for the beach/water this weekend.

I will take some pics and try to post soon. Please message me if you are interested. He is a dog I would certainly call my own, but I already have one and can't take on full responsibilty for another.

Thanks,
Jen

Bless you, Jen. I have a Humane Society plate on my bike, donate all I can to the place (which isn't much) and I'm about to make a move to another island that, were I to take Freddy, would require a six month quarantine for my pooch. I can't do that to 'im. I am going to miss him so much. My ex sure is happy, though....

OUCH! to both Jen and Marty.

Jen, why can't you keep your fostered dog as a companion animal? Animals thrive on animal companions and two is always better than one. You shouldn't have fostered in the first place if you had any doubt at all about giving the dog back to the Humane Society. Taking in a "foster animal" really shouldn't be taken lightly.

Animals are territorial by nature and it takes them quite a long time to become familiar with a new familly and a new environment. So, if you determine this dog is beach/water friendly, then what? He gets used to a new home, a companion animal and then gets tossed off back to the shelter with some credits? I'm sorry but that is very sick. Animals aren't expendable beings.

Marty, I find it harder to believe that you said what you said about your, "Freddy." I assume that you're moving to the BVI? And your "ex?" I'm quite confused! Maybe I'm confusing Martys?

Well, as you might gather, this post doesn't sit very well with me at all. Cheers to all!

Wow STT

Your kinda coming out of left field here!

The point of "fostering" an animal (just like fostering a child) is that you give them a warm environment thats better then the alternative of sitting in a steel cage at the human society's office while they await adoption. I'm rather sure that this humane society is like most; IE underfunded and fostering is one way the local community can support the society's efforts to keep our furry friends well, healthy & happy! It also allows the dogs to socialize more and become more comfortable around us human folk, that in turn makes the K9 more likely to be adopted.

Which is better while a dog awaits a new family; a cold steel box with far to little play time or a warm home and trips to the beach?

I'm going to guess Fido prefers the latter...

STT Res,

No, not the BVI...Grand Cayman. I was offered a job that may have me there before Feb 1st. My wife (we are separated, hence the 'ex') will keep Freddy, which is why she is happy. Why is it hard to belive that I don't want my best friend living in a cage for six months? He'll be happier living with her. I'm just thinking of his well being. I love that little guy with all my heart! The wife I can lose...it's the dog I'm gonna miss most!

STT Resident, you are unbelievable! I hope that one day you can find happiness in a pure form and not in berating others.

I am pretty sure the word "Foster" is in dictionaries in England, so there is no excuse for your response.

Pics will be up soon. This was not a post for entertainment, but rather those who may be interested in a great dog.

I am not even going to dignify this with any further response.

Cheers!

Hi Jen,

I think you are doing a very nice thing, by fostering this dog.

These islands can be a pretty brutal environment for many pets, even for those pets that have a so-called "home."

A lot of animals on this island need help. In a perfect world we would all have enough room and financial resources to adopt them all, but this is not a perfect world. Therefore, IMHO every little bit helps.

Best :)!

I also think that you are doing a wonderful thing for the dog that you are FOSTERING. I really wish I could do the same, but my landlord will only allow me to have one pet so I try to take time to spend with the animals at the shelter. I am not an official volunteer be I am stonly considering it.

I apologize. I misread and misinterpreted after rather an excrutiatingly bad day with sideswipes coming from all directions in myriad areas. Not an excuse because there really is none. Sorry.

Try the Pets from paradise program - they send small dogs to new homes in the States. he looks perfect - and sooooooooo cute. Dr Paul Hess DVM on St Croix could give you more info, or the Animal shelter on STX. Perhaps you have the program on STT also.
Keep up the super work!

Hi Jen,

I thought I would give this a bump just in case you haven't found a home for this little cutie :)!

Good luck -- I really do wish I could take him!

thanks for the bump, Mell. We may have found him a home in islander@heart. We will see come this weekend....

I am also going to be fostering a one eyed chihuahua after the holidays if he is still at the Humane Society. So keep your ears out, everyone!

See above posts for pics, but he's already been adopted by a great family 🙂

Next, I will have a one-eyed chihuahua after the holidays if he isn't adopted before I arrive back on island on Jan 2nd. So keep checking back and help me spread the word!

Happy Holidays to all!

Jen

He's going to a wonderful home with islander@heart and his family where the fur will be pet off of him! I had the privilege of meeting his family and this little guy couldn't be going to a better place! Here he is with his Christmas bow on the way to be an early Christmas present for a very excited boy!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!
