Driving a Scooter on STX?

Does anyone know if I would be able to get around on STX with a 50CC Scooter? I hear there are steep hills and sharp curves. I love my scooter and would hate to leave it behind. I am leaning towards living on the west side.

Thanks!

I own a Vespa LX150 that I keep stateside and love dearly. I wouldn't bring it to STX for love or money. Between thefts, hairpin turns, and potholes you could lose an Escalade in, I fear it wouldn't last long on island. Proper motorcycles with road presence and which are capable of speeds > 50 MPH are a better idea.

(On the other hand, if it's a beater and you're gonna use it exclusively for tooling around F'sted, it might not be a bad idea. I wouldn't use it as my main on island transport, though.)

Keep in mind that it rains a lot here, suddenly and hard. Sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for a day. It's nice to have a covered vehicle, even if a soft top. Bring or buy a thick chain and lock for your scooter.

I see em on the island. Once you get here you're going to wish you had SOME kind of transportation. If it's not that much to ship, I'd do it, I plan on going to Florida over the holidays so I can pick one up and ship it out. I get around right now on a stand up scooter, does maybe 15-20 mph, the ride's a little rough but I'm grateful I have it here. Plus, once you get it here you can flip it for twice what you can state side, just take a look at what people want for cars down here, nothing reasonable and the vehicles still get purchased. That's what I plan on doing with mine once I get it here and have used it a bit. It's too hot to be biking or walking right now, you'll be kicking yourself if you leave it behind, trust me!

LOL...From "don't do it...dumb" all the way to "you'll be kicking yourself if you don't". kinda leaves it up to you, doesn't it?

Here's a middle of the road opinion:

Where do you plan to ride? Are you just going to get around downtown F'sted? Not a problem, but if you think about striking out for Sunny Isle or all the way to Christiansted or taking a ride out to the north shore beach, not a good idea. If you will be riding home from work at night, and you live anywhere more than a half mile out of town, I wouldn't do it.

We had a tenant who worked at the Buccaneer, a few miles east of town. Our apartments are a few miles west of town. He was concerned about his safety on a scooter....not from the potholes and other drivers, but from the street people he had to ride past in downtown C'sted late at night. He wasn't comfortable being so open.

A good compromise...bring it...but don't plan on it being you main form of transportation. Just use it for shorter distances and scooting around your own neighborhood.

And don't forget that angry dogs can run faster than your scooter. Might want to carry some pepper spray or a big stick with you...
