Apt. Scam on Caribbean.Craigslist.com
$700 / 1br - direct access to the beach right from the condo in St ,Croix (St, Croix Virgin Islands)
I contacted the "landlord" bc the ad was so vague. He (paul joey ) proceeded to tell me he lived in South Africa and had the key with him and that all he cared about was that the place was taken care of. $700/month, $200 security. Yeah, right. Proceeded to give me the address of the place...which was the building of a real estate company on St. Croix. Contacted the realtor, she confirmed it was a scam and notified Craigslist. I got his "application" which was a joke, lol. Do people fall for this stuff? Just before you waste your time and/or get your hopes up 🙂
I almost sent this guy an email earlier today. Thanks for the warning!
he also post the same ad for St. John and use the name Mike Joey when replying inquiries. This is not the first time he post the ad in Craigslist. Last year when I was looking for apartments in STJ, saw his ad, emailed him, and he was in such a rush to ask for deposit. I ask for the address and pictures of the apartment before any deposit to be made, he sent me some 1"x1" images of an apartment that does NOT look like any apartments on an island, there were high rise buildings outside the windows, good that I got sharp eyes. when I keep asking him for the exact location of the apartment he stop replying. such a scammer. when some thing sounds too good to be true, it is NOT true.
beware people!!!
We ALWAYS tell people not to make any deposit without actually seeing the unit. I know this is hard when you are not on-island, but believe me, it will save you heartache in the long run. Even if the rental is legit, you need to see it and meet the people managing it. What might be great for me might be a disaster for you.
I inquired about the Le Grande Princesses condo as well. Within 2 emails he wanted me to fill out the app and send him a check. I flat out asked him if this was a scam. His response? "What is a scam?"
I asked him about the address and which condo it was. I'm familiar with the area and he had no clue at all. Kinda funny once I knew he was a scammer to mess with him.
Keep an eye out!
Noah
Unfortunately, "Mike Joey" is still running the same scam. I emailed him and he sent the phony pictures and the one page rental application. When I told him I wouldn't rent without seeing the place first, he stopped replying.
Renters beware! He's still out there!
We have a couple of efficiency units on St. Croix that we rent out on a monthly, or month to month, basis. It's the perfect answer to not having to commit to a long term arrangement, sight-unseen. We do require a deposit to hold an apartment, but it's no more than you would pay a hotel for just a few nights.
Sorry to hi-jack the thread for my own advertising, but I've been complaining about craigslist scams for years. Makes it hard for people to trust legitimate landlords, like me!:D
I flag the scams every day. Apart from the very obvious giveaways (hydro, heat, close to city transportation, parks, etc.) you can be a little leery if no local telephone number is listed. Anyway, a quick email shows them up quite fast.
That's a very good reason to use a Real Estate company and a licensed Realtor to help you in your search to find your long term rental and it costs you nothing.
I found another one this morning as well as per below!
$700 / 3br - premier location & neighborhood available immediately for rent (St. Thomas, VI)
I notified the Agency they were using the photo from.
It's sad there are so many people ready and willing to scam and steal from honest people.
Wish they could be caught and tossed in jail!
