This is why we need to stop fearing GMOs

People are living past 37 for many other reasons besides the specious claim that it is due to pesticides.

One other thought: I'll be the folks that sprayed the methyl bromide at Sirena thought it was safe, too, huh?

They broke the law. It isn't labeled for inhabited dwellings. It was a crime. Read the article I posted from PLoSONE. It is an actual peer reviewed journal. Total pesticide use down 37% with GMOs. Yields up 22%. Farmer profits up 68%. If you do not think that pesticides have increased our life expectancies by helping control rodents, weeds, fungal diseases and insects you are willfully ignoring facts.

Yes they broke the law and it was a crime, but methyl bromide is still being used as a pesticide in agriculture.

nbc news article

Of course a peer reviewed journal will say that pesticides are safe because it is in their best interest to do so.

Joan, do you even science? Peer reviewed means reviewed by OTHER researchers. Are you claiming the biotech companies have been able to buy off researches yet oil companies cannot? Lolololol.

Methyl bromide SHOULD be used in agriculture. If proper safety measures are followed it is the best soil fumigant you can use.

Ok. I read the whole article. I'm still wiping tears from laughing. There are SO many flat out lies in the BS propaganda piece I do not no where to start. I'll start with the ridiculous "terminator" seed. Never ever ever ever has it been brought to market.

"They pretend to be shocked that their critics in the scientific community question whether crops genetically modified with the genes of diseased pigs, cows, spiders, monkeys, fish, vaccines and viruses are healthy to eat. The answer to that question is obviously a very big “no way!”

No no no. That is not how any of this works

I'm not saying anyone has been bought off, just that we cannot believe all the claims that these chemicals are safe. There are many chemicals that were thought to be safe, and then proven not to be. Remember thalidomide? How about DDT?

I remember both. DDT did wonders for insect vector borne diseases. Too bad it moved up the food chain too readily. Again, science isn't perfect, but a quest for perfection. Hence the use of GMOs.. Modifying Mosquitos to prevent malaria is a good thing in my opinion.

Now that is a balanced piece Alana that points to many positives of GMOs and the ongoing concerns.

The longer one lives the more one realizes how cyclical all this "good stuff/bad stuff" is. Eggs, butter, lard and a host of other foodstuffs have been "bad" for you followed by complete turnarounds by the scientific community several years later.

We live in an era now where "sanitization" has been taken (in my opinion) to a ridiculous obsessive degree. Wipe off all your countertops with heavily advertised germ-killing sprays and wipes; hand-sanitizing spray machines in supermarkets; spray all your children's' toys, etc. etc. Natural immunity developed through playing in the mud as a child flies out of the window as everything is sanitized to death.

Good grief. To GMO or not to GMO - do what you want but save the hysterics.

No hysterics here, just concern.

Speaking of hand sanitizer, did you know that you can use hand sanitizer on a paper towel to easily start a fire if you're out of lighter fluid? Just don't use it on your hands and then try to warm them over the fire. Whoosh!

hand sanitizer does nothing good for you. there was a small study done that showed all it did was swish around the germs and that you were better off just using plain water, but of course soap and water was much better. over use of antibiotics is crazy also, though it can be found-hand soap without is hard to find.

and i actually agree with ot on the letting your child play in the mud

Hmm they didn't test for the hundreds of chemicals allowed by "organic" farming though?
