Real ID
oh jeeze.... sign me up for a national database, I bet that won't get abused, like the internet or phone records have....
funny how so many states rejected this, but the territories snap it up like candy.
Its just another money grab...
The REAL ID Act of 2005, Pub.L. 109–13, 119 Stat. 302, enacted May 11, 2005, was an Act of Congress that modified U.S. federal law pertaining to security, authentication, and issuance procedures standards for the state driver's licenses and identification (ID) cards, as well as various immigration issues pertaining to terrorism.
The law sets forth requirements for state driver's licenses and ID cards to be accepted by the federal government for "official purposes", as defined by the Secretary of Homeland Security. The Secretary of Homeland Security has currently defined "official purposes" as presenting state driver's licenses and identification cards for boarding commercially operated airline flights and entering federal buildings and nuclear power plants.
On December 20, 2013, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that implementation of Phase 1 would begin on January 20, 2014, which followed a yearlong period of "deferred enforcement". As of January 2014, 21 states are compliant, 20 states and territories have been granted renewable extensions (until October 10, 2014), and 15 states and territories are noncompliant (but are eligible for extensions).
I still don't understand how the BMV can require a Social Security Card (as stated on Judi's site) as identification when it specifically states on the card "not to be used for identification purposes". Why do they need my SS#?
FEDERAL REQUIREMENT:
Documentation required before issuing a license or ID card before a card can be issued, the applicant must provide the following documentation:
A photo ID, or a non-photo ID that includes full legal name and birthdate
Documentation of birth date
Documentation of legal status and Social Security number
Documentation showing name and principal residence address
.
When I renewed my driver's license in May 2013, I had to show my Social Security card and the following shown in this link:
https://www.vimovingcenter.com/talk/read.php?4,203870,204111#msg-204111
It conforms to the Real ID ACT OF 2005.
You may have to list you SS# on the form but they no longer put it on the actaul driver's license as they used to do. Thankfully!
Alana, yes you are right. Your SS# is no longer printed on your driver's license.

A passport should suffice, however, they INSIST that it must be a Social Security card.
Please note the AND in the requirement.
Documentation of legal status and Social Security number
The only irrefutable way that I know to DOCUMENT a SS number is to produce the card.
Actually, the VI Voters Registration card lists your social security number. I produced that and was told - not good enough. My original question stands, how do they require you to use something as ID that specifically states "not to be used for identification"?
Ask the Feds - it's their requirement.
