Nurses relocating with a 14 yr old
Planning a visit to decide if moving to STT would be the right decision. We have a 14yr old daughter and we are nurses. Looking to get a job in the Cath lab or ER but can't get a call back from the managers of these departments or a nurse recruiter. Wondering if anyone has insight on raising a teen on the island and or nursing jobs. Thanks in advance.
Welcome to the board!
You might want to post this under "General/Relocating", as this section is for people who want to chat about non-VI issues.
1. The cardiology section is in a holding pattern until the new full-time cardiologist starts. I keep hearing every week that it is *this* week. Did you call and ask for Heart and Lung? They might be able to give you better info.
2. ER should respond. They need you! Not sure how you contacted them, but try the website: http://www.rlshospital.org/Home.aspx
3. I know many happy young people who attend http://www.vimsia.org/
Good luck!

Just wondering if you are still on board...:D
Your daughter will love it here and never what to leave.
Yes, I agree. I went down to St. Thomas when I was 16 years old and it was a magical time in my life, but then again that was back in the late 60's also. Times were a might different back then.

This the best example of how lazy, foolish, unprofessional local government employees can be. Qualified RN is looking for job while hospitals run on temporary, expensive, travelers and locally trained nursing.
The nurse makes several phone calls and doesn't get the call back at all.
Can you afford private school for your 14 year old?
Or a parochial school?
That's something you should check into prior to making a decision.
I doubt she'd be happy in the public school system which has many issues.

I don't think that's a very fair statement. Plenty of transplanted children do just fine in the public school system and, from what I've heard from more than a few teachers over the years who've spent time teaching here after coming from stateside public schools, stateside schools have the same "issues".
Don't really care what you think.
It's a valid assessment that bears consideration and investigation.
I've known many great public school teachers, as well.
There are issues and problems with and within our public school system and have heard all the various stories, good and bad.
A good school with easy integration for a 14 year old, in or beginning her freshman year of high schoo with extracurricular activities is going to be important.

Then control yourself and save the snarky retort in favor of ignoring if you can't manage a simple and civil response.
I gave you a simple and civil response.
Anything else?
A school that does not have a properly equipped Physics Lab, Computer Science Lab, Chemistry Lab and Biology Lab (yes , ALL of them) cannot give a child an education that makes them competitive with the rest of the United States.
Guess what the public schools in the VI do not have.

Aw, never played the victim card in my life and not about to start now. But, aw, your (sic) playing the get-a-dig-in card again? How surprising ... 😮
Exactly. Anyone who thinks VI public schools are comparable to even the worst stateside school are delusional.

Well, I guess my question to Heathkim is moot, as there has been no response.
The good news is that Dr. Sterling, the new full time cardiologist, has started as of this week. Hurray!

Keep telling yourself that 😎

Guess you have never heard of Detroit Public Schools where an 8th grader "with the highest marks" taught a math class for over a month to a class of almost 50 students because the teacher quit and they couldn't get a replacement.

I am talking about VI schools. What does this have to do with the quality of education in a VI school preparing a student for a future?
I was quoting Ms. Jane who said the VI schools are worse than the worst stateside schools. Then called people who disagreed with her ridiculous comment delusional. The public school are subparagraph here, but no worse, maybe even better, than MANY stateside inner city schools.
Unfortunately you may be wrong about being worse than the worst.
