Marijuana legalization wins majority support in poll

By an overwhelming margin, 72% to 23%, respondents said the federal government’s efforts against marijuana “cost more than they are worth.”

VI should either legalize or allow medical cards (basicaly the same as legalization) and join in the tax scheme's and bennifits that colorado and washington state are enjoying..

HUGE profit can be had for something that is already happening everywhere (and in public? I was at the horse races and everywhere I went it smelt like burning skunks).

The drug war failed, we cant even keep drugs out of prison, time to change the stratigy and pull this multibillion dollar industry into the relm of taxes and out of the relm of shady deals in dark alleys.

hell just allowing the growth of HEMP (non intoxicating cannabis cousin) plants would revolutionize the economy here

Why do people think legalizing hemp would do anything. It's legal in most of the world and hasn't changed anything. If it was so profitable, don't you think China and Korea would be growing it for all the textiles?

I don't smoke weed anymore, but there is zero reason it should be illegal, except putting money in rich peoples pockets. Legalize and tax it and move on.

Currently, more than thirty nations permit the growing of industrial hemp.63 Industrial hemp is also recognized as a legal and legitimate crop in both the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).64 The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not permit the production of industrial hemp.65 Other countries, such as Canada, allow hemp production due to its cultivation advantages and growing demand for hemp products in the North American market.66 Moreover, the United States is a leading importer of hemp products.67 Currently, the North American hemp market exceeds an estimated $300 million in annual retail sales

Your right, why would we wan't to get in on a 300-350 million dollar market (in north america ALONE! this is an estimate from early 2000's, it's more like a 2 BILLION dollar market now in 2013)

The industries are just starting to realise the uses of HEMP that were known back in the begging days of this country, hemp oil is one of the most efficent bio-fuels around (we could fuel generators for power on the island off our own crops at much lower costs, the generators are already diesel and could easily burn bio fuels (oils))

and with a 365 day growing season the islands would be a great spot to grow this amazing plant, you can make fiber pannels that are stronger and lighter than steel (think Fiberglass, but using hemp fibers instead and resin)

so many industrial bennifits its astounding, Canada makes a LOT of money off HEMP and has been greatly increasing it's hectares of the product every year.

Colorado is already looking to jump on the wagon with their recent state legalization

Industrial hemp could jump-start economy

The Declaration of Independence was written on paper made of hemp. During World War II the federal government launched a “Hemp for Victory” campaign urging people to grow the plant to make ropes for the military.

Until the late 1800s, nearly all cloth and virtually all paper were made from hemp. It was so valuable that hemp could be used as money.

But that was then.

Today, industrial hemp isn’t strictly illegal, but farmers must get a permit from the Drug Enforcement Agency to grow it — something that’s proven impossible. Colorado and Washington have joined nine other states in legalizing the crop. But despite the passage of Amendment 64, the DEA still must give permission, even though states issue their own permits.

Colorado farmers could be able to grow industrial hemp as early as next summer, with state permits alone. It’s unclear if the federal government would raid industrial hemp farms operating without DEA permission.

Needless permits

Supporters say that it makes no sense to require federal permits. Hemp is harmless, they say, and can benefit the economy and environment. Hemp can remediate soil damage, be spun into clothing and bracelets, help create soaps and lotions, and even absorb tons of carbon dioxide a year. Currently, U.S. imports of hemp from Canada and China equal around $2 billion annually.

It could save the island, and that is not an overstatement.

Hemp was huge a hundred years ago, it's not a new thing. I think the possibilities of hemp have been realized plenty of times.

Modern uses are far better, you can basically replace petroleum with the plants seed oils
