With the recent loss of Sprint LD service for fixed line telephone, my understanding is that leaves only VIYA as the sole remaining LD option.
I'm thinking of dropping VIYA fixed line altogether after 35 yrs of service to avoid the recurring monthly charge and moving to voip.
Does anyone have experience with MagicjackGo ($35/yr) or other voip phone service which uses a direct internet connection (obviating the need for a computer connection)?
Any input would be appreciated.

I've been using it for years. $20/year. The only down side is no 340 numbers. I have one in south Florida. I used to have a real phone plugged into the MJ box. Now I just use the apps on my smartphone or tablet.
I do get a lot of telemarketing calls on my MJ number.

Rotorhead: Appreciate the input. Could you comment on call quality, dropped calls, etc?

I have never had a problem as long as my Internet connection was good. You can't use it for faxing, but the voice quality has always been ok.
