Corporal Punishment

i agree with aanda on this, children today are much ruder and more disrespectful than they have ever been and i think it is due to a lack of discipline. always trying to make the kid feel like everything they do is right and that there never is a looser. someone has to loose and someone has to win and life is not fair-kids just dont know that these days.

Years ago the American Psychology Associations (APA) came out with studies showing that it is harmful if all kids are winners. Studies were done with 5th graders and they showed that if you told the kids they were winners even if they did a bad job they became lazy/angry when challenged with difficult task. I forgot the name of the studies probably easy to look up. Some school systems have greatly ignore the APA warnings.

Spanking can be done properly. However parents/teachers tend to spank out of anger and that is shown to be harmful. I however would never spank my children just because I do not think I could do it the correct way. I also believe that if government wont physical hit people for crimes I should not be allowed to hit my children. However like I said psychology studies have shown as long as you spank the correct way it can be effective form of punishment.

As I recall the study..it is the term "smart" and "hard worker" not "winner". Maybe a different study. Children who are often told they are "smart" were found to begin to put less effort in to their school work as opposed to students who were told they were "hard workers" began to continue working harder.

i agree with what you said. Also, discipline can take many forms and not just the "beatings" i hear mothers talk about.

Totally agree with you speee1dy however the Government can't dictate what a private school does hence the proposed ban only applying to public schools.

sure they can, it becomes assault, that's the legal term anyway.. and even worse, it's assault on a minor.

Most schools, public and private, have student handbooks which outline all information, including discipline. In many cases, parents and students have to sign off on these rules/policies.

I agree with punishment in schools, but not spanking. This is something if done should be done by the parents. I had a very bad studdering problem when I started school. I got a teacher that believed that she could beat it out of me. She would make us read openly in class like a round table reading session. When it would get to be my turn, I would start studdering, she would grab my arm and drag me into the nearest bathroom with her paddle and spank me. I would then return to the class room and when it got to my turn to read, I would start studdering again, she would do the same thing again. It was nothing for me to get 3-4 spankings a day for that entire school years. The other kids you would think would have made fun of me, but after a while they started crying when I would be required to read. I stopped crying after the first couple of weeks of school and became immune to it.

At least it’s not dead, just going to tweak it with a few amendments and try it again. I don’t know why the attitudes of some of our senators surprised me…"it’s our culture"….really???
Then maybe it’s our “culture” that has us in the rut we’re in…..

I was most surprised with the AFT president, Rosa. Wow! Just wow. The teachers need protection?

And sitting right next to her is the Senior Legal Counsel for the ACLU telling us that the National President of the AFT is helping with the federal ban bill...
