It’s possible humpbacks are rescuing seals, sunfish, and other species by mistake, but there’s a chance they have altruistic motivations.

BREAKING: FIRST LIVES LOST AS RISSO’S DOLPHINS KILLED IN TAIJI
09 SEPTEMBER, 2016
In an eerie resemblance of last year, almost to the day, the dolphins’ luck ran out when a pod of Risso’s were driven into the cove and slaughtered.
After hours of hunting, our hopes were high that it would be another ‘blue cove’ day. While there were previous drives since the 2016/17 season opened on September 1, the dolphins had managed to escape the hunters. Not so today.

BuyInjured Beluga at the GA Aquarium Is Proof That Captivity Hurts Whales
Written by Michelle Kretzer | September 9, 2016
An eyewitness sent PETA photo and video evidence that a female beluga whale held in captivity at the Georgia Aquarium is being attacked by a much larger male—and she can’t escape him in her tiny tank.

The female has extensive rake marks all over her body as a result of the male’s aggressive sexual behaviors, which include biting her head, neck, and body. She constantly tries to get away from him by flipping around and swimming away.
Their actions are starkly different from common consensual beluga courtship or mating behaviors in nature, which include touching heads, touching pectoral fins, swimming side by side in close contact, and nodding their heads.
The federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) prohibits housing incompatible marine mammals in the same enclosure—as well as housing marine mammals “near other animals [who] cause them unreasonable stress or discomfort or interfere with their good health.”
By forcing this female beluga to live with an aggressive male, the Georgia Aquarium is subjecting her to unnecessary stress and putting her at continued risk of injury.
Despite the aquarium’s failed attempt to import wild-caught belugas from Russia as well as mountains of evidence that belugas suffer in captivity, the Georgia Aquarium is determined to spend millions of dollars to put more whales in its tanks.
But PETA is just as determined to stop the suffering. PETA is filing a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and requesting that officials inspect the Georgia Aquarium and take appropriate disciplinary action for apparent ongoing violations of the AWA.

California bans orca captivity and breeding following SeaWorld's decision to end its program

Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Tuesday that will outlaw orca breeding and captivity programs like the one formerly run by SeaWorld theme parks.
California parks will also be banned from featuring the marine mammals, known as killer whales, in performances for entertainment purposes. Starting in June next year, orcas in captivity can be used for "educational presentations" only.
The law, authored by Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica), makes exceptions for scientific and educational institutions holding orcas for research or rehabilitation.

SOLD INTO SERVITUDE – “I’LL TAKE THE BABY”
17 SEPTEMBER, 2016 BLOGCAMPAIGNSJAPAN
Day Two – September 17, 2016, Taiji: By 5:30 a.m. the cove was already bustling with activity. Four skiffs carrying fishermen, divers, trainers and buyers would set the stage for the remainder of the day. The atmosphere could almost have been carnival-like, with shouting, splashing and boats coming in and out.
Except for the 80-100 bottlenose dolphins held overnight, with no access to food or freedom.
Instead, what enfolded was a macabre display of callousness, aggression and a complete disregard for the terrified, sentient beings who were now in the process of being sold into a life of servitude.
