Yacht Club / General Questions
East Ender,
I am assuming that you are then a member of the Yacht Club, is that true? If so, I think I remember reading somewhere that the membership fee for a year is $500.00...do you know if that is right? What does that entitle you to? Match racing seminar with Peter Holmberg...wish I could have been there for that. We just had a match racing regatta here with Farr 40's...great racing!
Islander,
Talk about an unconventional education system, I will definitely check it out when we get down there in October to see what they have open. At the very least, I would imagine that they are always looking for substitutes. Do you have the web address for the school district?
Probable hard to get off the island for Christmas if we were in a tourist related job...right? Just trying to figure out our flights...we could get a round trip out of Chicago for about $350.00 and then do a one way from Chicago on the 27th of December. Or, we could just do the one way from Chicago on the 25th of October and get a round trip from St. Thomas. Also trying to figure out the car situation, are there quite a few "beaters" for sale. We have a new Pathfinder that we are considering bring down with us, which is paid off but don't know if we want to bring it down with us....although, I'm not really sure why we would leave it. Thinking about bring it down after Christmas, apparently Dawn would like to be settled before we ship the car....must be a woman thing!
C & D: E-mail me, or I'll e-mail you...
There is a site for the education dept and the private schools also have sites (some of them) Try this:
Try www.teachislands.vi for education contacts and teaching opportunities.
We have a Montessori school here on St. Thomas visit them at http://www.vimontessori.org/ Another private school of similarity to Montessori is Antilles School http://www.antilles.k12.vi.us/ - they are both private schools - for public school placements you would need to contact the Department of Education which is the link given above. Also we have a university, if you are qualified to teach on a college level - you can visit them at http://www.uvi.edu (Not sure if you can do university - but figured if someone else read this post it might help them so included it)
Yes if you had a tourism job... December is a high point for season... so might be difficult to get time off. I have had friends in retail that because ships were in had to work on Christmas day, several waiters that I know worked Christmas Eve, New Years Eve... tought call - not sure where you will be working so hard to predict ability to get time off for two reasons: season and also you would have just started working there so the christmas vacation time may already be alloted to the employees who have more time in then you or who already requested it months before...
I always find that one ways are more then round trips... are you finding them to be cheaper. If it is cheaper to get the round trip... then just pick the dates for as far apart as they can be... I think 30 days... after that the ticket price goes up - perhaps this is not the case with all airlines or all fares... and then at least you have that insurance... if things are bottom of barrel terriable you have the other half of the ticket to go home as fast as possiable... if things are working out as planned then through the other half of the ticket away AFTER the date passes of course. Last ticket I bought I had the departure and return dates more then 30 days apart at no extra fare cost... so check on it.
Yes there are many island cars.. but island cars cost more here then they would go for in the states... I would say if you coming to stay for a while definately consider maybe driving down to Florida and shipping the car... unless you can ship from somewhere closer??? Perhaps Dawn figures if things aren't working that the car will be a tough thing to deal with. I would say ship it - you will need it to get settled.... getting furniture in place, apartment hunting, job interviews, grocery stores... how do you intend on getting around????? Worse case you could sell it here if you have to leave.

Chad - the Pathfinder would be a perfect car to have down here in my opinion. I moved down last year and had my car shipped the day I left, so it arrived a week later. I shipped it and flew out of south Florida, Palm Beach area. I would recommend shipping it as long as you plan to stay down here for a decent amount of time (I forget what you said your plans were exactly). But having the car here will help you commit to the move and also make you feel a bit more at home. Plus you'd be spending a lot of money renting something for a few months, or potentially risking your safety by buying an old jalopy (a friend who moved down here at the same time as I did went that route and it was one hassle after another. Incidentally, she moved back to the states after 6 months!). Shipping a car here is easier than you think, and there are guys who can help expedite the customs and registration process for you, pay them $100 and they'll save you much legwork and aggravation.
FYI - there is an additional customs fee that applies to vehicles manufactured outside the U.S. My car is also a Nissan but it was manufactured domestically (the first digit of your VIN, a 1 in my case, indicates this), so I had to pay no additional fees. The biggest cost for you, besides shipping the car (which will run about $900 with Tropical, www.tropical.com) is the road tax, which is based on the vehicle's weight. You might pay $400-500 for that but it goes to a good cause as we can always use road repairs.
