working on the beach
i'm wondering if you need a permit to provide services such as hair braiding on the beaches in st. thomas. any info would be appreciated.
Fortunatly the USVI does not have to deal with the Nuisance and irritation of Beach Vendors. On some islands such as Jamaica, it is so bad that many people avoid the beaches so they won't be accosted by over aggresive beach vendors. I sincerly hope that beach vendors are arrested when they appear, so that nasty problem won't get a foothold here.
thanks for your input. i was wondering if i would be able to set up shop on the beach and do chair massage, but i guess not! 🙂
Hello Melisa,
Most beaches on St. Thomas are "part of" a resort; ie. Morningstar, Bolongo, Sapphire, Secret Harbor, Ritz, Bluebeards -Limetree... although they are all public beaches the access is through the resort so to set up a business on the beach would require their acceptance of you being there and so a business license would be necessary to actually approach them as to running a beach massage business at their place. Magens Bay is also public but you don't find vendors there, there is a concession that again you would have to work with the owners to operate something there. Coki Beach is the only beach with many vendors - food, hair braiding, chairs, dive gear... the food people are licensed... the hair braiding I am not sure but I do recall several years ago there was a motion for them to be licensed vendors so I think they are.
Some resorts have spas ... perhaps see about approaching them to run a beach massage booth... think about how you could work it out and see about doing it. Contact the resorts that have spas.
