hi all,

i was wondering if anyone has any info about working on a charter sailboat. i have read in more than one source that it is an easy job to get. i am an artist by trade and figure i'll have to get another job to support myself and this kind of job sounded very interesting.

so my questions are, how much experience is needed? what is the pay like? are there charter boats on st. john or are they mostly on st. thomas or st. croix? is this mostly a seasonal job that dries up in off season?

any info would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

beth

Beth: Are you talking about term charters or day charters? To work on a term (week long) charter, you need a talent, eg. you know how to run the boat or you know how to cook! Usually a full time job, and can pay well if you are a good chef or captain. You might talk to the folks at the Charter Yacht League 340-774-3944 if that is what you mean. If you are talking about megayacht charters, they usually hire out of their home base, frequently Ft Lauderdale. On the other hand, if you want to be a hand on a day boat, they often supply the on-the-job training. Many require you to have CPR certification and if you are a WSI (?- life saving certified) person, you would have an advantage. You'll end up serving rum punches and snorkeling with guests, for the most part. Don't quit your night job for that...
