Working on a boat
I am planning on moving to St Thomas Nov 1st and I need to fulfill my sea time requirements in order to get my oupv US Coast Guard License. My background is in sales. How hard will it be to get an entry level job on a fishing boat? Or any boat for that matter? TY
Nauti Nymph is hiring - check out the classifieds in the Daily News.
Most fishing boats have just a Capt. and mate here - if you are experienced at rod handling and bait prep you might get a position, but there are few of them. Nauti Nymph hires Captains mostly - will need License, STCW,Drug Card, CPR, and TWIC card .
The larger sailing cats and the Schooners downtown do hire crew regularly - the new Pirate boat in town may be looking now - definitely have a Drug Consortium card and a TWIC Card in hand for any of the boat jobs - it will save you time for sure.
Heavenly Days in Bolongo does a good job providing sail time and training and many of their mates have upgraded to Capt. over the years if that was their intention.
It is a matter of being on the docks here asking for work, and face time on a daily basis. There are crew jobs to be had with persistence and a good work attitude - but accruing sea time [ 4 hrs underway ] can take quite a while - keep at it and Good Luck.
The ad I read was Nauti Nymph looking for a salesman/steward - worth a shot.

I wasn't trying to discourage the poster - I meant most of the rental power boat companies have very few crew positions.
Thank you.
