Working Musician
I need a break from the mainland and was wondering if there is any demand for musicians
to play and stay for awhile/ live on the islands?
There are some excellent musicians who live here but only a very few are able to rely on income from playing for their livelihood.
So the resorts and bars and clubs
They don't have live music to entertain the tourists?
We have a good talented batch of musicians but seeing the same ones over and over is getting old. I'd love to see new blood here in STX. I cant really say if you could make a good living at it though. What kind of music?
For general entertainment... Everything from Classic Rock to Todays Country. What genre of music is most popular there
Resorts, bars and some restaurants play a variety of genres; there are open mic nights at several venues. Very few "clubs" here of the sort you're probably thinking of. The few late night clubs are mostly rather sketchy and music isn't the big draw. Sound carries here, even visitors tend to go to bed early by stateside city standards after all the daytime activities, noise ordinances are in effect and most music venues close out the sound by 10-11PM weekdays, later hours weekends.
We like a little bit of everything here, reggae, rock, blues, country, soca, etc. i gravitate to classic rock, and Caribbean country, Buffett, Chesney etc. Some of the places here will have music during brunch or our "Sunday Funday's" It may be hard to break in but worth a shot.

Yes, there is live music to entertain the tourists and locals as well but the musicians playing that music all have at least one full-time job or two other part-time jobs to support themselves. They play music to supplement their regular income which often isn't enough to live on. I dare say no musician on the island makes a full time living from their music.
That sounds alot like the states....
An artist seldomly gets paid for his talents.
I guess it's a good thing that i play for the love of the song!!!!
And i have other skills as well.
So with saying that, how hard would it be for a journeyman carpenter to find work there?
And thanks for the info (Afriend)..
... how hard would it be for a journeyman carpenter to find work there?
.
Not too hard - good carpenters are always in demand. However, the catch is that you have to be here as finding a job while off island is virtually impossible. Hundreds of people every year think of moving here but only a small percentage ever make the move so employers are naturally reluctant to discuss employment with anybody not physically on island.
Go through all the information in the drop-down menus top of the page and, if you're still interested after all that reading, figure out which island would best suit you and then work on a pre-move visit/scouting trip to see what opportunities may be open to you.
Good luck!
That is exactly what I will do Old Tart and thank you for the honest advice and encouragement. There's many reasons why I feel the need for a change of pace in my lifestyle and one is in hope to meet some real truth. You may see me around down there someday soon.... Thanks for the luck, but I'm living on FATE!!!! Thanks again..... Bay.
