Hi there warm weather friends,

We have really enjoyed reading these posts.

My wife and I have been down to the islands many times and have a long running day dream of making the move there. Figuring out what to do there is the bump in my plan.

I have a well established dance school here in the midwest (tap, jazz, hip - hop, ballet, salsa/ballroom) I have been technically trained since I was about 7yrs old.

Are there any dance schools down there?
Is this something that would have a positive impact on the community?

I think it could be developed down there. I don't know if it could make enough money to pay the rent on a studio.

How receptive would locals take to American ballet and jazz., i.e. contemporary dance. I think the kids would love it the way they do here.

What about jobs in the area of fitness/personal training?

Any info or thoughts on this from people on the islands would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Matthew and Kate

There have been posts on this board from people moving to the island who hope to find dance lessons and other such activities here for their children once they move. The locals have classes and gatherings for Quadrille and other historical dances. There is a large baton/majorette program for island girls, as well. It seems likely that other forms of dance would be of interest. The question is how many people would be willing to pay for your services.

There is a pretty good business base here for personal trainers. Those services are fairly easy to market to the wives in Shoys and Judith's Fancy.

Hello Matthew and Kate,

There is a dance school for children on St. Thomas called the VI Institute of Performing Arts (340)777-9110. On St. John the St. John School of Arts at: 340-776-6777 or 340-779-4322 offers some dance.

Antilles School offers dance as an option instead of or in addition to PE, it’s taught by Kaye Robertson. (You can find an email for her on the school website http://www.antilles.vi/about/contact_us.htm), maybe she’d have suggestions. The Antilles School Gym also hosts a few adult dance classes at different times of the year, doesn't seem all that regular as far as I can tell from looking at the schedules; but I have seen salsa, belly dancing and maybe ballet on the lineup at some point in the last 1-2 years.

I do think this is something you could develop and offer classes for children and adults and perhaps also see about networking with people in martial arts to offer that as well. (Martial arts are offered at some gyms.)

Adult dance classes is something that is asked about often enough and isn't available as far as I can find.

You could also get in touch with some of the local dance groups here on island and see about having their instructors teach some local dances. For example the Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers.

Ballet, tap and jazz are the classes that are primarily taught at the dance school here, so it is well received.

There are several gyms so you could seek fitness, personal training work.

Look into this, and keep us posted on the progress.
