Wooden boat haul out
Does anyone (perhaps Pamela) know whether there are any boatyards on STT or any of the nearby islands, including Puerto Rico, that have a railway capable of hauling out a 65' wooden boat (with a 23' beam) for maintenance? She cannot be hauled with a traditional travel lift because (1) she's wood; and (2) she weighs over 50 tons. I thought I'd just ask here, first, to see if someone knew before spending the time calling around to all of the marinas. Thanks!

There are marinas that can haul the weght but the wood part .... hmmm .... let me ask around. My first thought is Virgin Gorda. Skip AYH and if it this summer Puerto De Rey is alread full for season. I'll ask Scott on Satori - she's about that size and wood.

Thanks. I've sent an e-mail to Jonathan on Canim too since he might know. Although Canim is much bigger and heavier, she falls under the same scenario that she'd have to be hauled on rails and cannot use the travel lift due to the weight together with the fact that she's wood. Haven't heard back from Jonathan, but I know it's a busy season and I'll be patient.

Rails? Grenada is a possibilty. George from IBY says Sopers Hole Boatyard has a rail. St. Croix Marine says no. Fajardo says no. I'll keep looking. You coming for the boat show next month?

Ang,
Checked Canim's calendar and it appears they haul out in Boston so that is no help. Carter (Flagship) says the only one is in Soper's Hole - Frenchmans Marina. Fajardo has a travel lift that can do 50 tons. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Thanks so much. My friend in Tortola, who is at Sopher's Hole, just this afternoon told me they have a railway there with a 200 ton capacity - more than enough! I was also forewarned about getting everything estimated in writing and to keep a close eye on the work being done at that yard, or to have Damian at Admiral Marine Management coordinate and supervise the work being done there. Ideally, I'd just like to get hauled out and moved to a place in the yard, if possible on a railway haul out, and do the work myself. I've worked out a deal with a wooden boatbuilder friend of mine to take him and his wife out for a week or so after charter season is over and he'll do my annual hull maintenance for cost of materials used. And after maintenance is done and they are enjoying their time in the islands on my boat,he'll drive the boat for me on "their vacation". What a deal. Who's vacation is that, theirs or mine? I get my maintenance done and someone will sail me around the islands for a week or so. Gee, twist my arm on that one!
I had a feeling Canim hauled in MA, but if you don't ask, you don't know.
Boat show - you bet I'll be there! Counting down the days on my "island calendar" (it moves pretty slow too!). Coming in on Delta on the afternoon of May 11, and I'm very, very much looking forward to meeting everyone and learning as much about everything as I can.
