Winds on STX
Has anyone heard what our strongest winds were during Irma on St. Croix?
I keep hearing we only got category 1 winds.
I think I heard 135 mph winds where registered on Buck Island on the radio, however, isn't there a Buck Island by St. Thomas also?
listening to it from in the house leaving the back door open for air and light and the few trips outside i dont think we ( where i live ) had anywhere near that
I have been wondering the same thing. It really didn't sound worse than Omar but there were a few crazy gusts up on Hermon Hill. Not sustained though.
to me it was barely a tropical storm
The portion of the storm that went over us only contained tropical storm force winds. There might have been some hurricane gusts at higher elevations. We are so lucky that we did not have any tornadoes touch down. Did you see the photo of the boat on top of the house on STJ (think it was STJ) A tornado did that. They must have had scores of them throughout.

Yes, there is a Buck Island at STT. Guess folks weren't too creative with coming up with names back then.
Tropical storm force winds are "sustained winds for up to 1 full minute, not exceeding 74mph".
So STX did not get anything over that?
that would explain the same street names in christiansted and frederksted
