Cause theres lots of red tape, flack from neighbors about a tower in their view and very high initial cost.

However, got some cash or good credit and you got 24 hours a day wind, in a private area it can make alot of sense!

Skystream and Bergey seem to be the wind turbines of choice atm.

How do wind turbines (tower-style) hold up to hurricane force winds?

A few years back I saw a new wind power product that is small, low-profile, and is meant to be installed on a roof. It looked like it could be taken off or protected by a cover if hurricane-force winds were imminent. If I find the link, I'll post it. I was considering this when I was looking at building (an idea I have since given up).

I've also read about some type of nanoparticle paint (and/or film) that collects solar energy. Now wouldn't THAT be great? Paint your house, get off the grid. Don't know the status of that product...

Thanks, erkm. I hadn't kept up with this in the last few years. Looks like the nanosolar "paint" is still a ways off.

I looked around for info on the rooftop wind turbine. The exciting product I read about a few years ago, Mag-Wind, seems to be a big bust. Google it. Looks like it was either a big flop or a big scam. Sigh.
