Will a Nav system work on STT?
As we are selling things that wont be coming with us in June I am wondering if anyone knows about a Nav system that will work on STT?
Last summer when we did our PMV we brought along our Garmin Nav system, but it turned out to be more humorous in the way the street names were pronounced than actually helping us find places! I think I will always get messed up at which way to turn at the old Mahogany tree on the north side :S
So, does anyone know of a reliable Nav that will work most of the time for STT?
Thanks!
Cheryl
In two weeks to a month I promise you you really won't need it. You just need to drive around and notice the landmarks. The nav sys will just be a waste of your money and you will need that money here. 🙂 The best way to learn is just to get thrown in and its not like you can get lost, sooner or later you will hit water.
More importantly just remember right turns you cross the traffic lol
In the past year the Garmin has upgraded the information provided for STX, STT and SJU. My father had one here (STX) and it worked surprisingly well - not perfect but much better than I expected. He indicated two weeks ago that there was yet another update for this region he would download before coming again. I say if you already own it, bring it - you will learn your way around fast enough but it would be beneficial when you travel.
One of the cars we shipped from the U.S. has factory navigation but I haven't bothered buying the Caribbean disc for STX. I do have a handheld Garmin I bought for the island when I moved here last year and it was a BIG help for the first month or so. I don't use it much these days but the handhelds are GREAT if you ever have company come visit because you will have built up a list of favorite locations and all you have to do is hand it to your guests and they are free to roam the island without stress.
GoodToGo~ what Garmin do you have? We brought our Garmin handheld last summer and it barely worked, it sent us in circles at times.
I have a Nuvi 760 with the latest map download. I never got sent in circles but there are some paved and dirt roads that come close but aren't connected (or connect on private property) I've been sent on in the past.
I have held off posting on this because, well, um, sometimes my sense of humor is grossly misunderstood. But thanks for the laughs, I can just hear the computer generated voice saying "turn right when you reach the herd of goats on the left hand side of the road".
You will get the hang of STT in no time.

Or : it is the next turn, after the big mango tree, where they 'used to' have the dump truck in the yard.
In Louisville, we natives still give directions referencing a large Sears store that moved almost 15 years ago.
Surprisingly it turns out our unlabeled roads actually have names or numbers 🙂 Someone using the navi probably couldn't ask a native to clarify an instruction as they wouldn't recognize the street names but it generally works so no need to worry.
Again as someone else said you won't have use for a navigation system long on these islands except to share with visitors or when you go to another country (I use my often for business trips back to mainland U.S.)
