Why do Classifieds say this...
I've noticed that a LOT of ST Thomas Classified listings actually say "Stove + Fridge"....really? are there a lot of rentals that DON'T include stove and fridge?
Seems so strange! Especially for such a transient place.
I wouldn't say there are a LOT of unfurnished rentals which don't include both but I guess there are enough (and I've seen many over the years) for the advertiser to mention it and save the question being asked! Some LL's don't want to be bothered with the hassle of fixing a broken appliance, particularly when it comes to figuring out whether the damage was "just one of those things" or was caused by the tenant's misuse. Unless the appliance is still under warranty it's not easy to find someone competent to come out in a timely fashion to fix things which is probably another factor. The "transient" or "newbie" population doesn't usually look at anything other than fully furnished rentals for obvious reasons. Hope that helps.
During our initial apartment search, we frequently saw units that were sort of "carved out" of a large home. Some of these didn't really have anything you could call a kitchen, just a mini-fridge and a hot plate. And, I don't find it very strange that a 20 something single guy coming to work on a boat or in a restaurant for the season just looking for a cheap place to sleep and shower would care about having a real kitchen. I know someone right now who fits this description and, indeed, lives in a place that definitely has no real refridgerator.
Another reason to not rent sight unseen, though! It sounds like you are in a different place in your life, CAtoSTX, as am I. 🙂
Many rentals in the VI are simply small apartments that are built as part of a private house that is commonly owner occupied. There are not too many apt. complexes. Supplying a simple stove and fridge will generally ensure that the tenant has a more vested interest in living longer term in the apt. for the private individual who is renting an apt. that is really part of their private home. Moving in with furniture, pots and pans, linens, etc. the tenant makes a stronger committment than simply moving in with a suitcase of clothing - so the stove and fridge mention in the ad is not really implying that many apt. don't supply these appliances but stating that this apt. will really only appeal to someone who is already living on island and owns a household full of goods as opposed to a much more transient tenant who would need to buy furniture, bedding, and more to live there. The landlord is also basically stating that they will replace the stove and fridge if they break but the tenant will be responsible for all their own furnishings.
These places have a stove anda fridge but nothing else. Some often will use the term "Full size."
By stating they have these 2 appliances in the rental, it does not automatically commit them to replacing in the event of appliance failure, tho most will, unless due to tenant misuse or abuse.
I think you've just made it seem even less logical and more confused than before.
sorry I asked.
But good to know that I'm going to have to ask when responding to ads.
Go see it. Then, you will know. I wanted to see everything in our price range...that's how we found the perfect place. I L O V E where we live. I am going to be sad when we finally DO move. Come and look at everything!! We made it our job the first week we were here. Good way to get to know the island, too.
Most of the apartments around us on STX are as Exit Zero described - a living space separated from the rest of the house, typically a separate suite-type arrangement with bedroom and a private bath and some living space, but no kitchen. A few houses have a separate small "guest cottage" which is rented as an apartment, but again typically have a dorm fridge and no oven, just a microwave and/or hot place. But, most have access to a lovely private pool! 🙂
Another value of the PMV - you can visit many of these different types of properties and inspect them all for yourself and decide what suits your needs.
We're coming - and looking forward to looking.
🙂
Also I think in some European countries (even England if I'm not mistaken) it is more customary to have to acquire your own appliances in when you rent a place. For those not coming from the states this is worth mentioning.
