who does your taxes on STX?

Can anyone recommend a good company / person to do my taxes? I've always done them myself in the past, but I'm a little daunted by the W-2VI and the dual filing. I went to go to H&R Block this afternoon (on Strand street downtown according to the website) and was told when I called that they're no longer in business in STX.

I would prefer someone closer to East End to avoid the driving a bit, if possible.

Thanks!
Lisa

I had a horrible experience with H&R. I had used them in the past in the states but when tax time arrived after moving here, it was the most excruciatingly slow thing I've witnessed.
In the end, I took back my info and filed them myself using TurboTax. I plan on using TT again

I use Turbo Tax every year, but it doesn't give you a place (in the Deluxe edition) to enter a W-2VI, nor does it accept "VI" as a state or is it listed as a "Foreign Country". If you have a way around this, I'd love to hear it, because all our previous information is already there!

Lisa

P.S. The last (and only) time I used H&R in the states I could have done it faster myself, also!

Many years ago I tried HR block and when the person entering my data hit a deduction worth $10,000 that I was entitled to,his system kept on rejecting it. I said Give me my paper work back,Delete whatever you put in so far and left. I even had a CPA recently miss taking a 16,000 deduction that I was entitled to that he missed on his final checklist. After I caught it and told him about it he fixed the return and admitted it was a big error on his part. AT $140.00 an hour ooopps like that make me wonder sometimes , how whacked the whole system is . In life a GOOD,lawyer, doctor, and accountant are hard to find ANYWHERE. Good luck.:D

Can't wait for a universal flat tax. The time has come....but what will all those "tax preparers" do? Get a real job?

I'm using TurboTax, as I have done many times. I have to augment the output with some manually prepared forms for MN and VI, but TurboTax is a good start.

In October, I found an office that says they do taxes. It's in Sunny Isle. I waited about 10 minutes. Nobody noticed me. I left.

David Sheets CPA 773-7510. Really sweet guy! Remember you get to write the cost of a tax preparer off of next years taxes! I'd rather go with a pro then mess it up myself. He's been here like 20 years and has an excellent reputation.

popflops, the vi isn't listed as a state, it is considered foreign country on turbo tax.

It's either Jim Sheets or David Johnson - they work out of the same office and are both good.

Yes I meant Jim Sheets, been friends with David so long I guess I switched their names. Last I heard David was just doing taxes for companies, not personal, but I havent asked him in many many moons, that's why I recommended Jim. Both of them are great!

I've used H&R Block's software (formerly called TaxCut not called H&R Block At Home) for the past two years with no problem. They even had the forms for determining VI residency (last year I was a part-year resident so I e-filed and had my refund in about 10 days.)

By the way, VIBIR refunds can take forever, so try to plan it so you have little or no refund due. Or just apply the refund as a credit to the next year's taxes. By the time you get your refund, it may amount to the same thing anyway.
