White Spots on Leaves
I know this subject has come up & dumb me skimmed over the info.......please forgive me, but I'm gonna raise the question again.
What causes white spots on the leaves of flowers, trees & veggie plants. It appears to be like a mold (white & fuzzy) & taking over my beautiful patio garden!!! Slowly killing my flowers, now attacking my trees.........aaaakkk!
Oh yeah, will soapy water sprayed on the plants help rid them of aphids? I generally spray deadly spray on them, but since it's a patio garden & my dogs hangs there, I don't want to make her sick from the poision.
What to use or do to save them? Any help would be appreciated
Thank You.
GBH has an organic insecticide soap, you have to spray it on a lot. The commercial guys use Sevin.
It sounds like mealy bug. White cotton bits that have some juice when you pinch or rub it. The plants are stressed and need water or fertilizers. The mealy bug is hard to control with only organic means. If you have the time and can reach the leaves, wipe the leaves with rubbing alcohol.Other than that spray, and keep your dogs away until the spray dries.
Could be the mealy bug.......seen what you're describing on a couple plants & got that mostly under control.
But the white spots are small & eventually cover the leaves......it looks like mold............no liquid smooshes out
I water and fertilize religiously.
Thanks for the info!
Here's a great site that I found with useful information.

Hi Islandtyme,
Could it be Powdery Mildew?.... see http://www.google.com/search?q=powdery+mildew&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
I get Powdery Mildew on my Magnolia tree and especially on my Monarda. I usually get it (on my plants... not me) if I stupidly water at night... the leaves get wet and stay wet overnight. Best to water in early morning and fight the temptations to water in heat of day or at night. Also, drip irrigation helps to avoid the problem because the leaves don't get wet from the watering. Now, I know someone's going to say "but, how about when it rains at night"... yup, it's a bummer, that can lead to Powdery Mildew. I've never sprayed anything to try to control it.... I have a small pond nearby, and the spray would kill the fish. The Magnolia Tree always seems to recover in short time. If I get it on the Monarda, I lose the Monarda for the year (leaves wilt and die), but it comes back the next year.
I'm guessing that you've got a new garden to tend...
And... Aphids are tough. The ants farm them and really take good care of them. But, I think Safer's Soap works (eventually)... but if you spray at night, you might get Powdery Mildew. I like to watch Lady Bugs go after Aphids... they're like a T-Rex to Aphids... can you buy Lady Bugs on STX?
Treat if fast otherwise it will kill your veggie plants.
Perplexed I am.
The white spots eventually cover the leaves & they fall off. I tried the alcohol treatment on the leaves & it helps for a day or so then it comes back.
So far this mystery plant attacker seems to like a couple of my plant the best ......which I have no clue what they are. (the plants....I found them growing wild & decided to pot them....they were beautiful until this spot situation)
The one plant has what I can only describe as tentacles (I call it my octopus plant), and these tentacles have tiny bluish purple flowers w/a white center, and bloom in the mornings only. The humming birds feast on the flowers & the whitish mold eats the leaves.
Almost all the leaves have fallen off, tho new are sprouting.......the tentacles & flowers seem fine.
The other plant is another morning bloomer........this one has a tiny deep purple heart shaped bloom with pretty white almost zebra stripes. It hasn't flowered in a month or so & now the leaves are becoming covered with spots. :-X
I try to always water from the bottom as to not burn the leaves.............
Thnx everyone! I have lots of reading to do with your sites!
