Which island did you choose and why?
I'm moving to the islands in a couple months, and am wondering.....where should I live and why? I'd LIKE to get a place for under $700 per month and possible pre-pay for 3-6 months up front. I've worked in state government for over 13 years in the IT field, and hope to find a decent wage within a couple of months of being there. Which island offers what? Is it difficult getting between the islands? Can you live on one and work on the other? Why did you choose the island you moved to?
Thanks

If you want a place for less than $700 a month, you'll be best off on St. Croix, unless you are open to sharing expenses with a housemate.
There are ferries between STJ and STT, 20 to 45 minutes. From STX to STT, the best way to go is by seaplane (there is a ferry but it's a rough crossing, a long journey, and not much cheaper than the plane).
It is possible to live on STJ or STT and work on the other island. If you're on STX, you'll probably be working on STX.
I hope to find a decent wage within a couple of months of being there.
Don't count on it! You may have to get by on lower wages in a field outside of IT until you find something decent. Do you have an employer or clients for whom you can work remotely? Maybe you can bring your work with you.
We have a nice apt. available - http://property.vi/apartment/
St Croix is the most livable, in my opinion. You do need a car to get around here - and it always costs more than you think or plan for....
STT is too busy, too many tourists (my humble opinion). STJ is gorgeous - but not very livable. Stx is JUST RIGHT!!!
both stt and stj have higher gas prices than stx. i didn't choose stx for myself, it was chosen for me by my husband. i was happy living in the keys.
i do like but do not love living here now. for me it is just too far away from family.
Thanks for all the info. Still not sure what I'll be doing. Maybe I'll stay a couple weeks on them all before I choose. *-)
Kim, thanks for the info!! Looks like it'd be right up my alley. I'm not going to be there until about June or July though. I see a lot of adds that talk about gated communities. Are un-gated communities un-safe? Someone posted in another of my threads that I'll need a bullet proof vest. I'm sure that it's not considered 'standard issue', but I'm sure there was a reason they said it. Looks like murder rates are high, and mostly of residents. Well, I'm trying to become a resident. :S Thanks again for the info. I'll have to see what you have as the times gets closer.
