where to stay in STX
My husband and I are coming down to STX for my job interview. We are arriving Nov 6-11. Looks like the best we could do on prices was to fly into STT and take the seaplane over to STX. The prices for a direct flight into STX were alot more and harder to book a date. Any suggestions for places to stay during our time there? We don't need a 5-star hote, just something nice, reasonably priced. What about best places to rent a car or would public transportation be okay?
My husband will be needing a job too if we decide to come. He is a minister (Baptist) and probably will be changing careers. He has a master's degree. May be interested in teaching. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Lora
Hello Lora,
Try some different spots to look for a good deal...
www.kingchristian.com
www.sandcastleonthebeach.com
www.canebaystcroix.com
www.chenaybay.com
www.hotelonthecay.com
Pulled those up from the rate sheet for hotels...not in any order... pulled them out for more resonably priced spots.
Try Avis Car Rental, used them the last time I went over and was pleased with service and the car.
Teaching - there are a couple private schools he can look at... and the public schools you would have to go through dept. of education....or the university www.uvi.edu...
Here is one school - Good Hope: http://www.goodhope.k12.vi/birthday.php
and another http://www.stxcountryday.com/
All the best.

don't stay at cheney bay. stay there this spring. the toilet cver flowed six times. the sewage was comming up behind the tennis courts and it took two hours for our dinner.
I'd recommend the Hotel Caravelle ( http://www.hotelcaravelle.com). It is well-located on the waterfront in downtown Christiansted, is modestly priced (for the Caribbean), has a fabulous staff, and is a very nice hotel - not a resort. It also has a secure parking lot, a rarity in town.
For car rental I don't think you can do better than Goldmine ( http://wwwstcroixgoldmine.com). His prices are great, his cars are new and clean, he's easy to deal with and he's a half block from the Hotel Caravelle ;-). He can also arrange pick-up at the airport. I'd call though, I haven't had great luck with the e-mail. Most locals consider this the best rental agency on island. It's the best and easiest of the places where I've rented - ever.
We stayed at the Waves at Cane Bay. Seems like it was about $85/night. It's a bit rustic, but clean and the lady who runs the place is very helpful.
Interesting about your airfare comment. I don't know where you are flying from but for that period of time (November) fares are "offered" from the west coast for about $600 ,from Chicago at about $500 and from the east coast at about $400. The seaplane quotes a $180 fare from stt to stx and return. While it would be interesting for you to fly into STT and "discover" more of the USVI I can't imagine that the fare is really any cheaper than a more direct fare from the states. RENT a car... no other option.
You can find something for under $30 per day during November.

Hi againfrom Florida.
I have been to St. croix about a year ago. Stayed at some resort just about 2 miles from Green Cey Marina. Would this [ Green Cey Marina] be a place to stay ?Does anyone know what their rental rates are. It seemed like a good area . No one bothered U. Then again Common Sense goes a long way , when U are in a new place. I am planning to move to V. I.in September of this year. Maybe I could find a Baot at the Marina. The Casino isn't very far from there. I may have mispelled the name of the Marina. Thanku Ed.
WE're flying out of Richmond, VA. I checked prices via internet for flights from RIC and from Wahshington, DC including Dulles and Baltimore-Washington. It was harder to get an available flight directly to STX.THere was one available but it would be about $100 more than flying into STT and taking the seaplane. I thought it might be nice to have a little time in STT too since it worked that way. RIchmond is not an easy airport to fly out of. A lot of the flights had 2 layovers and took a total of 12-13 hours flying time (including layovers). All in all I ended up with 2 roundtrip flights to STX (including seaplane tickets for under $1000.
It is Green Cay.... Chenay Beach is pretty close to it, Bucaneer Hotel is not far from it either. Both are before getting to the marina. The hotel right at the marina - basically same entrance I believe is Tamarind Reef Hotel which runs around $125 for double occupancy. It is relatively quiet. The casino is down the road a bit - correct.
