Hi I am considering moving to the VI I am a registered nurse and have checked out the hospital web sites....just wondered if one hospitals reputation or working conditions were drastically different than the others ( iam kind of leaning towards St. Croix as enjoy some of the rural life ) Also my husband is a mechanic his business is mobile marine service (fixes your boat at your place) are there other services like this what is the best place to look for a job in his field? Does one island have more opportunities than the other? He is liscenced in both auto and boat (also many professional certs.) He also built our 30 wooden sailboat from scratch...seems he should be able to find something.

I have no doubt that either of you will have any difficulties finding work. The only way to find out about the hospital working conditions is to see it for yourself. Meaning, going to the hospitals you are considering and actually talk to some of the nurses there off the record. Also spend a little time in both islands to get the feel for things. You can try becoming a travel nurse for a few months too.

As for your hubby, you can check out the yellow pages at www.usviyellowpages.org and make a few phonecalls to see what the demand is for his field. Spending a few weeks or months in the island won't hurt a bit either.

Good luck!

Nursing - St. Croix's hospital seems to be more 'needy' then St. Thomas' hospital in terms of conditions of the hospital it self. I am not sure if this makes working there more difficult, although it would seem that it would.

I do recall St. Croix having a place that builds boats. Its next to the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Reserve. I dont know the name of it though.

Marine service jobs for your husband - I am certain there would be jobs there, so many folks have boats, there are many boatyards. Like Patrick recommended if you go to the yellow pages, and search for marine services, boat supplies, docks.... and call some places and ask questions - this would give you a good idea about those possibilitities.

St. Thomas is a busier island, so offers more oppurtunities for jobs, things to do, people to meet an so forth. Also is close to St. John - so is an easy day trip, evening for dinner and so forth.

Good idea to visit both islands, as they are very different.

If you have not already - order the Settlers Handbook - lots of great information there, telephone numbers, discussions on each islands.... http://www.vitraders.com in the book section.
