This is obviously coming from the mom - my son and friend are coming in tomorrow for a week and will be staying at Hotel on the Cay...wondering where their age group hangs on the weekends? Boardwalk, or somewhere else? I'd like to be able to give them a clue....also, if they miss that midnight ferry ride over to the hotel, are there some independents that might run shuttle for a few bucks? I can predict right now they WILL miss the last ferry the hotel provides if they find any nightlife at all....

Thanks!

Hi Becky,

There is no LAST ferry to Hotel on the Cay - it just ceases to run regularly after a certain hour. But the hotel is required by law to have a captain on call all night for just such an occasion as you predict. Your son and friend will only need to call when they are returning and the ferry will come to meet them. A close friend of mine is one of the captains and his schedule includes several "overnights" a week there.

Cane Bay is pretty lively on the weekend, as (I think) are the beaches in Frederiksted. Maybe the beach at the Divi - I've run into some of the young servers from various establishments there occasionally on their days off. I don't think too many folks just hang out on the boardwalk.

As far as nightlife, there are several bars on Company Street that have a younger crowd (Bongos, Club 54). I think Moonrakers is still open. Once they meet up with a few young people I'm sure they'll find more places to hang.

When we were in STX, The Brew Pub there by the boardwalk did have steak and beer night on Mondays. There were alot of young people in there drinking and hanging out the night we were there. Don't know if they still do the Monday night special.

Thank you both....Joanne, that's good info about the boat captain. I would bet he is ONE UNHAPPY CAMPER when he has to get up because a couple of folks went on island time themselves!

Which bars/restaurants on Cane Bay would you suggest? We're a little slow, have only been to OTW, and I haven't paid attention to who was there other than us and the people we were meeting.

I know the mini jump up is this weekend - I suspect they will do fine without me as their Activities Director...still, I'd like to act like I know what I'm talking about, even if I don't!

Actually Captain Tommy just considers it part of the job he's paid to do when he has to retrieve late night revelers. He was actually rather peeved with a guest who decided to swim back rather than call him.

I don't know if Cane Bay Beach Bar has reopened. I heard that the name was changing to something like the Full Moon Bar at Cane Bay, which seems to suggest that they still like the young crowd (of which I am sadly no longer a memeber).

Also, since Rumrunners has the best happy hour in Christiansted anyway, I'd suggest they ask advice from any of the bartenders there while knocking back a couple of rums. They're good guys and all in that age range. There's a group of varied ages that hangs at the deck bar there for sushi too. And if they're there at sunset they should be sure to catch the tarpon feeding. They feed the sushi scraps to these immense game fish right from the dock - great photo op.
