where do 20something LOCALS party
ok so im still trying to decide between which island, but im really leaning towards STX. but every time i read about things to do, bars, clubs, fun ect, its all very "touristy". being a 25 yr old black man, i feel like i would atleast athestetically be able to blend in with the locals, so where do they go/what do they do for fun? im trying to stay out of tourist heavy places
Even though I live on STT. The "locals" can sense you are not one of "them".
You might have the same skin color, but the culture is totally different than African-American from the states.
Not to say you can't hang out with them. Be friendly. You can make friends with "locals".
Good luck with your move to STX.
I've had black friends here tell me that "they've never felt so white" since moving here. They just share more in common with white continental's than black locals hence feeling more comfortable hanging out with white continental's. We are all individuals and of course you may be different though.
I will say this, I think that to divide up based on color or place of birth is a mistake. There are many who are "bawn here" who are culturally more continental (regardless of skin color), people who are born on the continent who want to be "Ras" and are culturally more "island" (again regardless of skin color) etc. It's just a hodgepodge man, I'd say come down and hang out with people you think are cool, fall in where you fall in, it's not hard to make friends here.

Not sure why you get the impression that the places you mentioned are "touristy." STX, in fact, is far less touristy than STT and STJ. Many of the bars are frequented by visitors and locals alike (of all colors), and there's not a big distinction here between "tourist" and "local" joints (at least that's my impression). The bars and restaurants on the boardwalk in Christiansted have a big mix of people (the brew pub, especially, is hopping in the evenings with both locals and visitors) and the beach bars on the North Shore and West End also have a great mix (Rhythms at Rainbow Beach on a Sunday afternoon is a great example).
Personally, I haven't been to any of the truly "local" bars or nightclubs, but mainly because that's not my scene.
I think you'll find on STX that people mix very well, regardless of where they come from or where they currently live.

Well said; that, I think, states the matter in a nutshell.
Best,

I will say there are some places (bars, clubs) that are less "touristy" on STT. Many Santo Domingo bars. There are a couple West Indian bars. One just opened in Barbal Plaza.
Also, many events and concerts are geared toward West Indians. Dancehall/Reggae & Soca concerts. You will see a few but not many Caucasians at these events.
I cannot speak about STX, but STT seems geared more towared a younger crowd. Especially the Red Hook area.
Sean, I agree with you. Stated well.
If STX is anything like STT, many local parties are sponsored by various promoters, and are held in different locations. You'll see posters plastered on trees and telephone poles advertising the event. There are a few, small clubs that cater to a young, local crowd, and you'll find out about them if you just ask someone who's in that age bracket. The venues change from time to time as some close for whatever reason and depending on the DJ or band. Also, if you listen to the St Croix radio stations (not sure which one plays reggae, soca, dancehall, etc) you'll hear where the happenings are. I think you can find most of the radio stations online now. I know the STT popular station is 105.3 WVJZ FM.

The people in your age group on STX do a lot of private get-togethers...they may gather in groups of up to a dozen or so at a friend's house and party. There are not a whole lot of bars where that age group hangs out...used to be, but they closed (Hondo's, for example). There are some venues such as Frontline in Calquhoun, which is deep local. You have to like Caribbean music played at ear-splitting DB levels to hang with that crowd :@)
You will find the largest concentration of people in your age group whenever there is a function featuring some popular off-island performer who does roots-type music. These events are usually presented at the race track or at the ballpark in Frederiksted...sometimes at Island Center.
Forget about the Santo Domingo bars...you will meet a girl, and she WILL like you, but....
The club scene with your age group here is not like in the States...the young women will dress to the nines and beyond, but they are very reserved and they have to know you very well before they'll give you the time of day...you've been warned!!! Remember, you are dealing with young women who will practically bare it all in the streets for Carnival, then turn around and be all modest and wear a tee-shirt over their bikini at the beach. 😀
Like "stiphy" said, just hang out with people...
what is the "but....." associated with santo domingo bars lol? im curious now!

Hi. On St. Croix, there are a lot of people that come from the islands south of here, or 'down island, ' like St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Santo Domingo. While there may be some reputable bars operated by Dominicanos, the notorious ones are the whorehouses. They operate like a bar downstairs with verry friendly women that REALLY like you and want you to buy them an overpriced drink, then.....
You will pass them on the street and often hear loud 'bachata' music playing.
I think that was what the warning was about.
The largest one in Frederiksted was shut down in the recent police restaurant
raids/checks.
There is no island of ' Santo Domingo ' but the Dominican Republic is West of us on the other side of Puerto Rico on the island of Hispaniola.
Whatever
