Where did you buy your Kindle?
I just tried to order a Kindle from Amazon, and they won't ship it to the VI. I know lots of you have Kindles. Where did you get them?
Thanks!
Amazon. Family shipped it to me. But now that I have an iPad the kindle only gets used for the beach. I do like the kindle 3 better then my kindle 2 though.
I have purchased two Kindles from Amazon. Both were shipped with no problem to St Thomas. I also know of three coworkers who ordered from Amazon and had no problem with delivery to St Thomas. I think I saw Kindles in either Office Max or Radio Shack on STT.
We've had all ours shipped here, too. Try this link: Amazon help: US Protectorates
I had mine shipped by Amazon. I have seen them in Radio Shack, too! I love my Kindle....
Thanks. I'll try again, or maybe just walk into Radio Shack and check it out. In the meantime, I downloaded the free Kindle app on my iPhone. Then I went to amazon.com (on my computer) and purchased a kindle book to be downloaded to my phone. Now...here's the part I don't understand....How did Amazon know my iphone? My amazon.com password is not the same as my kindle app password. It is the same email address. They didn't ask for anything, not phone number, kindle log in info, etc, but as soon as I opened the kindle app, it downloaded the book. Amazing!!
I bought mine from Amazon about 6 months ago. Shipped to STX with no problems.
You are right it is amazing! Once you have the app amazon knows to send your book to that app. I have the app on the kindle, ipad and iPhone. When I purchase a book it asks which device should receive the download. I recommend the kindle to anyone who is an avid reader. I think my ipad is a great gadget but it is too heavy for reading long periods of time.
Just went to amazon.com and put in my location as Virgin Islands, U.S. and got this response in a pop-up:
We are excited to now ship Kindle to Virgin Islands, U.S.
I got my Kindle shipped to me on STX a year-and-a-half ago; Amazon says they'll ship to the USVI. Can't see what's the problem.
i got mine from amazon, but the att store in sunny isle sells it also
when you get yours you can lend and borrow books from lendle.com and get free and cheap books at dailycheapreads.com,
Just in case anyone else is Kindle shopping, here's what I've found out.
Amazon will ship the Kindle to the VI. They WILL NOT ship the one with the " free offers" (advertisements). The 3G wi-fi model, which I want, is $139 from Amazon. That's the one with the free offers. The one they will ship is $189. Of course, you don't have to put up with the ads, but from what I've been told, the ads are not intrusive, at all.
Radio Shack at Sunny Isle has the 3G wi-fi for $199 (I am assuming that is the one with no ads.)
They also have just the wi-fi for $149. It's $139 at Amazon, with no ads. With ads, at Amazon, it's just $114, but, of course, they won't ship it.
I imagine it has something to do with the fact that the ads may, or may not, be something we could take advantage of, so since they can't effectively advertise to us, we are forced to buy the one without ads. Makes sense, but I decided to wait until I'm in the states and buy one there.
That's good information to know. I was thinking of getting a new one with ads as a gift for myself and giving my old one to my daughter. So I guess I'll have to have someone send it to me when I'm ready.
I don't understand. I bought mine from Amazon for $139 with zero problems.

Which one do you have, Linda? Is it 3G? Does it have ads?
$139 from Amazon (right now) gets you either:
wi-fi - no ads - WILL ship to the VI
or
3G wi-fi - with ads - will NOT ship to the VI
Sorry for showing my complete lack of tech savey(sp?) I do have the one without ads. lol

I have been looking for external sites so I am not limited to amazon's collections (and prices!). Thanks!
LitoVI, just one thing, the most popular authors do not allow lending on their books. i am wondering if when the library lending comes out if they will allow library lending.
that being said, i have gotten some pretty good books for free or cheap and have been able to borrow some pretty good books.
Does anyone have a Nook down here? I am leaning toward buying one of those rather than the Kindle. I will be going for a quick visit to the States next month, anyway, so it won't matter much if I can't find one or have it shipped here. I'm just wondering about the ability to purchase books on it as Barnes & Noble does claim that it cannot be done outside the US. Sometimes that counts as the USVIs and sometimes it doesn't. Thanks!!
last i heard, they did not ship nook here. but i have bought a couple of cheap books for my iphone from bn
Isn't nook backlit, like a computer? I use my kindle on the beach a lot and don't see how you could see to read something backlit.
I have a nook color & love it. I read @the beach with no problem. It was a gift so the account is stateside, however, my husband opened up an account using our STX address & hasn't had any issues buying books. I love the nook color over others because you can surf the web, check email, etc. My husband also rooted his and now it's a full function android tablet.
Here's an update on Kindles in the VI. This week's ads show Kindles with the special offers available in the VI. Office Max has both wifi and 3G version at same price as Amazon. Radio Shack also has the special offers Kindle in wifi but it is $124.
I found this post while looking for a solution as to how to buy that Kindle, get that great deal and overcome Amazon's territorial restrictions. Thought I'd come back and share my solution. I used a service called shipito.com which allowed me to have a US address, I shipped the Kindle to them and they sent it to me outside of the US. Worked great! So happy I can finally buy more from Amazon now.
I bought the Kindle, Wi-Fi, 6" E Ink Pearl Display model for $114!!! I absolutely love it! Just don't buy the 3G model without checking the 3g coverage area because it doesn't work everywhere.
Hope this information is able to help someone else!
Happy reading!
My 3G works just fine here on the northside of St. Thomas.
