Where can I find a Wall Map on STX?
Hi All,
Does anyone know if there is a place on island that sells wall maps of the Caribbean? I looked on-line, but the one that I liked wanted to charge me 17 dollars to ship a 25 dollar map?
Any ideas?
Thanks
Beth
There is a place on Company St. with maps in the window. I will be going by there in about an hour. I will make note of the name and re-post.
Franko's maps.com
Also, the park store in the Scale House has maps. I got a really nice one there for Ric for Xmas. $20 for the map and $100 to have it framed at Frame Up. But he's worth it.
Thanks, all.. I will check it out.
Linda, where is the Scale House? Dumb question, I know.
If you want a reproduction of a 1767 map of STX, check out the Library of Congress (www.loc.gov).
Put "st croix map" in the search box. The second search result heading will say U.S. Historical Cultural Collections. #2 will say Tiforand....(It's all in Danish)
I bought two copies of this map from the LOC about 7 years ago. One copy was on glossy photo paper (18"x24") and the other on regular paper (19"x29" the actual size of the map). Both have amazing detail and color. The regular paper one has a "treasure map" quality to it but will obviously fade over time.
I took a copy of this map to the St. Croix Landmarks Society at the Whim and they showed me their copy of the actual original that was not colorized. Someone colorized the Estates later and that version was the one the LOC acquired.
Beth,
The Scale House is the small yellow building near the King Christian Hotel. It is part of the Fort complex and used to be the - Scale house - of the port.
You really need to get east of Plaza once in a while!!
See you Sunday.
Hey! I know what building that is... just didn't know the name..
I went on vacation to Christiansted today! I bought a tank top at Purple Papaya, stopped in to visit the dog at SCUBA, went to the animal shelter flea market and hit Food TOn on my way home. Wow.. what a long drive. 🙂
You can maps of the Caribbean at the shop inside the airport - they aren't expensive (under $20), but when framed they look pretty good!
I got a two part map from the USGS United States Geological Survey. It's a topo map. It;s fun to look at the island and find the areas from a topographical perspective. Man am I boring if this is fun!
