What's up w/ all of the Bad news in the Newspaper
It seems like every day that I read the newspaper on line,(The VI Daily News) there is always a rape, robbery or murder. Are those things common daily occourances on the island. It is scaring me, about coming to the isalnds. Someone please tell me that I have nothing to worry about.
In Hawaii, we hardly EVER read about any of those things in the paper, and not everyday. Mabey a bank robbery here or there or a car theft, and every once in a while a shooting, but no armed robberies or rapes as daily occourances, unless the paper censors thoses things due to tourism. They do have a big ice(crystal meth problem )but for the most part I feel very safe in Hawaii, do all of you locals (especially women) feel safe in the V. islands? What is the dark side to the island that people shoud know about.
IE: here in Hawaii it has the highest auto theft rate in the US, Ice is becoming an epidemic here, along with theft, the homeless rate has increased by 83% in the last 4 years, the waiting list for low income housing is 5 years, Has one of the highest costs of living here, and the wages out here are really, really bad.
Do all islands suffer from these same kinds of problems. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
No matter where you go there will always be crime. Now depending on the media (yes they can hold their tongue), some things will be reported and some things won't. But in general, crime generally occurs in the low income, drug infested areas.
As a whole, common sense prevails. You wouldn't step foot into high crime areas in your neighborhood. The same would apply to the islands. The darkside will always be there. It's a matter of you being knowledgable and aware of your surroundings. This board is a great resource to adding to your knowledge of the islands.
There were 10 murders on St. Croix in 2003. The Avis did a story on each - with pictures. The bad news is the police have very little luck in solving these crimes. The "good" news -- they don't seem to be random crimes. Most of the ten were killed by someone they knew -- either domestic violence or the side effects of drug dealing. I believe there was one woman and 9 men. All looked to be of african descent. All were fairly young. One murder that got significant attention seemed to be retribution for a rape.
What I'm trying to say is this. I'm a white female, over 50. I don't do drugs, don't get falling down drunk in bars, and don't bring home strangers or give them rides. If I get murdered on St. Croix, my husband probably did it.
The people here are nice and I feel safe.
Part of the problem is that there is very little "NEWS" in the USVI. Because of that the "media" reports every violent act that occurs. That gives the perception of more crime than actually exists. Most mid sized American cities (100,000 pop) do not report violent crime...for what ever reason. So...the Daily news has an inordinate amount of violent crime reporting. And, as was already stated, the crime is very isolated and not well policed.
