What's going up next door to Wapa in sunny isle?
Just curious.. Does anyone know? The sign says Caribbean Cinemas project.
Could it be a new movie theater???
Yep!
Why? The other one is fine.
Rumored to be I max?
There used to be a movie theater on the other end of the building where Sears K-Mart is.
Same owners or different
Seems silly to build a new one.
The existing one is great, and was a pleasant surprise! Took me 8 years to get to a movie on STX - thanks Star Wars! Now I've been back a couple of times. Popcorn was good too.

The same people own the Sunny Isle Shopping Center AND Caribbean Cinemas. I can't recall her name but she is from Puerto Rico and owns shopping malls and cinemas throughout the Caribbean.
thanks for the info, im just glad this isnt going to wipe out the owners of the cinema. i was thinking mom and pop type owners, but i guess not

The old one is a perfect venue for a movie/restaurant... I've been to several in the states & they KICKASS!!! (especially when craft beer is produced on site)
i was surprised at how much nicer the one we have is compared with what i was led to believe.
no, they dont have gourmet food, recliner seats or child free. but i think it is still very nice.
Anything new taking place over at the old IHOP?
Same owner she just left the franchise, it now CHOP---Crucian House of Pancakes.
My company is Breunlin Construction and I am the general contractor for the project happening next to WAPA in the big field. We are indeed building a new theater. The new Caribbean Cinema will be a 30,000 sq ft, 8screen movie theater. It will be equiped with a state of the art sound system and digital projectors. There will be stadium style seating as can be found in stateside theaters and yes one of the 8 theaters will be an IMAX theater. There will be two party rooms available to rent for birthday parties, etc. Inside the lobby there will be a high quality cafe with a varied menu that will have beer and wine available.
The owners are out of Puerto Rico and do indeed own Sunny Isle shopping center as well as the existing theater at Sunny Isle. Why build another theater some have asked? The reason is the owners are dedicated to the future of St Croix and felt that the island deserved a greater movie experience. They believe in investing in St Croix and by building this theater they hope to help stimulate our economy by providing jobs and opportunities for employment in St Croix. We are on a very aggressive schedule and our hope is to open the doors to the new Caribbean Cinemas in time for Christmas....this year 2016. My team of subcontractors and workman are dedicated to make this happen.
awesome, thanks for a detailed description. cant wait till it opens

You don't really think anyone believes that, do you? She's a shrewd business woman who understands that, on many Caribbean islands, the movie theater is THE main source and often ONLY source of entertainment. Her strategy has been extremely profitable and successful.
Sure its nice to have a new theater, but, why not just call a spade a spade. She's building a new theater so she can make more money.
If they continue to allow babies and small children to attend inappropriate movies, its just be the same crappy experience with more comfortable seating.

I'm confused. Isn't that the premise of owning a business, to make more money? To find a product or service that people would spend their money on so that you can profit and if successful enough, you can employ others who will profit from employment? When did striving to make money become wrong? Good for her!

Its was the notion that she was "doing it for the good of the community" that I was ranting about. I love profit!
Caribstx... really???
Glass is always half empty I guess.

I don't think you get how this forum works, you are suppose to complain a lot, then give some vague guess (the wronger the better).
(note this part should only be a few words, the shorter the better)
The rest of your post should have been about how government corn subsidies related to popcorn sales are economically impacting the rest of the agricultural world.
Finally you close with some sort of statement that is derogatory to a minor subset of the island, lean back and watch the fun commence.
at least, this is the formula I've seen successfully applied many times here... maybe that's just for people who've been on this forum for a year or longer?
Is the popcorn GMO Free?
Good Lord!
Don't get Spartygrad started on GMOs. LOL
And now using the word "Lord" will get rotor head started on his atheist rants. LOL
Is the popcorn GMO Free?
You could not be more wrong! These people are investing over $10,000,000.00 in this theater. The pay back for this kind of investment in a theater on an island with this population is 30 years plus. If you know anything about business this would not be considered a "good" investment of anyones money. They will not even approach profitability for many years in the future. Yes, the hope is that it will help stimulate the economy which is good for Sunny Isle shopping center where tenant vacancy is high. In that respect there is a profit motive but do not discount the fact that these people believe in St Croix's future or they would never have undertaken this project.

This guy has it right!
Beer in the theater is +++++!!!!! yay!
I won't have to sneak them in anymore?
Thank you Breunlin.
I'd like to think the vast majority of those checking out this site appreciate your time to share this news.
Sounds great to me!
