What to bring to STT?

Hello all,

My girlfriend and I will be moving to STT on September 1st. I was wondering what practical items I should bring from home that aren't readily available or too expensive on the island. For example, toiletries, and other hygiene products. If anyone has any stories they can share about their move, and what items they wished they purchased in the States, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Haha..your post reminds me of my move...

When we came on our premove visit, my husband and I only went to Pueblo to compare prices (as you will discover after you move, Pueblo is ridiculously overpriced and their selection is abysmal). Based on their selection and prices, we brought enough tampons, pads, lotions, condoms, etc. to last us a year! Boy did we feel silly the first time we went to Costuless and KMART and saw everything there for the same price. I still think of all the luggage space I lost!.

There are a great many things that are not available here, but not so much in the way of toiletries. Unless you are wedded to a specialty or imported product, like Black Monkey Tooth Powder, pretty much all stateside hygiene and toiletries are equally available here.

Now, food items are another matter entirely...!

OK, G-Dub-ya, sorry to hijack your post but...

Onika, what on earth...?

This is the only link I can find about the tooth powder:

http://www.craptastic.com/items/2/monkeybrand.html

And this blurb: "Proprietory [sic] Ayuverdic Medicine containing haritaki, saurashtri, ajwanka phool, nlgrika tel, wood charcoal, sangjira, pudineka phool, kapur, iavangka tel."

Where do you get it? What's so great about it?

I miss Tom's of Maine....and about a million other things available only at Sephora (who does not, will not, nuh-uh no way no how ship here).

But this product is new to me....'splain, please!

Best,

LR

Ahh, my Monkey Brand Black Tooth Powder has you intrigued I see...

It is a black charcoal based tooth powder.
Makes the teeth sparkly, shiny white,
but tastes absolutely, positively horrendous.
I used to use it on occasion before I quit smoking.
Available in alternative medicine stores in most large cities.

BTW, you don't have to live without Tom's!

Many of the specialty products you may be missing are available on drugstore.com and according to their shipping policies...
THEY SHIP TO THE USVI!
Also, doesn't the Natural Food Store in Mandela Circle carry Tom's?

My husband says if you like cheese dip and Rotel to pack CASES of it - Velveeta is $11 a box, and Rotel was $2.50 a can! Other than that, he hasn't found the prices to be scary yet....but then again, I would imagine all he has bought is frozen pizza.

We are moving to STX - my husband is already there - I don't know about STT, but the Kmart in Fredericksted was a pleasant surprise -we were expecting a small town version like stateside in Arkansas, and we were very pleased.

Good makeup seemed to be expensive...

Sorry, but had to laugh about "Good makeup seemed to be expensive."

Maybe I'm too damned old now to worry about makeup but a quick sweep of a compact makeup and a swiffer of blush over the tan makes me feel just fine during the day and, for those evenings out, some eyeliner and mascara and some good lipstick is just an addition.

We're NOT "City" here and, apart from some events. dressing up is (unfortunately) going way out of style here. Too bad, as in my heyday here I really used to enjoy getting gussied up.

Still love seeing the older local ladies in their dresses and hats just on a trip to the supermarket and, on Sundays, seeing the local men in their dark suits, wives in very nice outfits and the children in their little frou-frou outfits all shopping at K-Mart after going to Church!

Really, though, I think you'll find far you have far less use of makeup than you're used to Stateside!

Oh, darlin', it ain't for me...I am NOT doing the makeup thing too much! But a friend was with me and experienced some sticker shock after leaving her makeup bag at home. No, for the good people of STX who have already met me, they can assure you I am not keeping the face glamour manufacturers in business! Tan? What tan? I burn and peel, burn and peel....SPF 40 is my best friend....

I actually plan to buy my make-up in STX when I vacation there each time. Products like Lancome, Estee Lauder, etc. are about 2-% less than in the state (and no tax). But, I paid a lot more for Maybelline mascara (couldn't find my regular brand) at K-Mart than I would at home - go figure.
