What to Bring

Help! I seem to find much contradictory information on what to bring on our move. Some say pack light and do not bring a lot of furniture/household goods, while others say bring all you can and divest through yardsale or BB postings once you determine what you do not need.

I will be moving to STJ and my company will pay for the move. I would appreciate any insight on this matter.

Thanks,

T

If your company is paying for the move, then that is a different scenario. My advice would be to bring all the items that you will need in your first year or so. If your furniture is suitable for the tropical climate (ie solid wood and not too heavily upholstered etc.) then I would definitely bring that. Furniture on the islands is v. expensive.
I would also bring all tools etc. If you are going to have a garden, then definitely bring big ticket stuff.
You can always sell it later.
Linens and curtains are also v. costly - if yours are at all suitable - bring 'em on down.
In fact, just load everything that you would consider relevant to the Islands - ie. no snowboards required!!!
Replacing stuff is always expensive and annoying.
Most people cut down the baggage due to shipping costs.

Ditto Jane if your company is paying for the move. Especially linens, placemats, napkins & towels & if you're a cook, bring your good cooking utensils & small appliances like a Cuisinart or Kitchenaid mixer. You might want to bring a box of good reads although amazon works fine here.

(I wish I could find extra fine, unwaxed dental floss myself. 🙂 )

I used to agree with the idea of go ahead and bring it all down, then I did it. Keeping in mind that on STJ there is just about NO unfurnished housing to be found. (assuming you are going to be renting) We've been looking for a year while our things sit in storage. Even the smaller kitchen items that you might would rather use than those in a furnished property can be a hassle. If you want to unpack and use your things you are going to have to find a place to box up and store those from the property. In all my research and even conversations with local friends no one even thought of the possible problem of not being able to find either unfurnished or only partially furnished housing. If they had, I would have gone ahead and left my stuff in the states for this past year. I would have brought only enough things to make us comfortable and familiar in our rental property.

You are welcome...it was just so sad to think of someone being floss less!
