WHAT' S AN AMERICAN CARS
I'M TOLD THE USVI DOESN'T CHARGE IMPORT DUTIES ON "AMERICAN" CARS BUT CHARGES A 3.5% DUTY ON FOREIGN CARS IMPORTED INTO THE USVI. WHAT DO THEY CONSIDER A U.S. CAR.
IS A CHRYSLER PRODUCT BUILT IN THE U.S. BY A GERMAN OWNED COMPANY I.E. DAMILER/CHRYSLER AN AMERICAN CAR? WHAT IS A U.S. BUILT GM SATURN WHICH IS NOW AVAILABLE WITH A HONDA ENGINE? DO THEYN LOOK AT % OF "U.S PARTS" ARE THERE RULES THAT ARE APPLIED OR IS IT UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL CUSTOM'S INSPECTOR. I'M NOT TRYING TO BE A LAWYER; JUST TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I WILL ENCOUNTER IF I TRY TO BRING A CAR INTO THE USVI .
THX FOR ANY HELP
It's all based on the VIN # of the car. I believe it's the final assembly point. Like some Toyota's are assembled in Indiana, therefore I would say that it is an American car. I thinkif the VIN starts with a 1 or 2, it's American. Anything else if foreign, double check that though. The sticker on your drivers door will tell you where final assembly was.
It should start with a 1 or 4. After that you pay duty. If it's a 2, it's Canadian, and will cost 6%!
