I worked at Greenhouse when I first moved to St. Thomas, and it has one of the cleanest kitchens on the island.

Must disagree that Mafolie is the only classy restaurant on STT. Hope it IS good now as over the years that location has been up and down with new managers/owners coming and going with the Trades.

My best bet on STT for "class" is Banana Tree Grille at Bluebeard's Castle. Owned by Liz and Jerry Buckalew for well over 20 years (it was formerly known as Entre Nous) their wonderful chef Patrick has been with them for the duration. The setting, overlooking STT harbour and the cruise ship dock is idyllic and the food and the service are always impeccable. Liz and Jerry run a wonderfully tight ship and their place truly exemplifies "island elegant/casual"!

Island restaurants come and go for many reasons. Also the names often remain the same but the chefs come and go and the quality does the same.

Which is precisely why I give my thumbs up to Banana Tree Grille.

And Blue Moon at Secret Harbour. Owner Julie is a good friend and the lovely Josh who's now cheffing there is creating some great grub - and the ambiance and service are terrific as well.

Cheers to all and happy eating on whichever island you may be!

St. Croix - Ditto Shenanigans for breakfast and lunch - great food, great price, squeaky clean. I'm also fond of Bombay Club for a wide variety of food that's fairly reasonable on the budget and a great location on the ground floor of an old West Indian townhouse. Best happy hour - Rumrunners (good food too!).

Heidi's Honeymoon Grill on Honeymoon Beach on Water Island on Saturday evening. She offers 3 entrees - usually red meat, white meat, pasta and/or seafood. Call her in advance and make reservations. She starts serving @ 6. When you arrive, just give her your name and they put your order on. Great food, great location, reasonable prices. BYOB or buy from Heidi.

For whatever reason, my post yesterday didn't make it onto the forum. So I'll repeat as follows.

Chefs come and go at the few longtime restaurants on STT. Restaurants come and go period.

Poster kathy said that Mafolie is the "only classy restaurant on the island."

The Mafolie restaurant has changed hands so many times in my 20+ years here that my head whirls exorcist-style trying to keep track. If the restaurant is now in good hands and doing well, then time will tell if their investment will pay off and keep them there. Only The Shadow knows...

Kathy, do you work at Mafolie? Just a simple question!

My votes were for Banana Tree Grille and Blue Moon. That's it for now!

STT Res,

ROTFLMAO at your colorful use of the language -- your British humour is shining through bright and clear today!!!

The Mafolie is a nice enough place, but by no means is it "the only classy restaurant on the island."

I didn't mention it earlier, but I do have toss in my vote (and several (tu) ) for the Banana Tree Grille, great food with very traditional Caribbean charm and ambiance!!!

Banana Tree
Craig&Sally's
Indigo
G&D Seafood (better than some of the fine dining I have had)
(The Old) Old Stone Farmhouse (can't comment yet on the new)
Last but not least,

HEIDI's on Water Island. True Island-feeling. Feet in the sand and food on the plate.
BYORed Wine for a romantic take.

I'm going to have to go with Romano's since well, I worked there.

I'm having a bit of stroll down memory lane tonight; anybody know if Romano's is still around?

The Veal Tongue is to die for.

Romano's is still around. I dislike the place because of the pretentious atmosphere.

Haha the atmosphere comes off as being pretentious, I think, because of the demand for quality service from the owner. The place is anything but pretentious, trust me. Catch it on a slower weeknight and it's well worth it.

This restaurant doesn't fall in line with the ones mentioned here (because it really is a play center) but FunZone on St. Croix in the Golden Rock Shopping Center has the best pizza I've tasted in quite a while. The prices aren't bad either. The staff is so so but the managers are great and make up for it. A good family style restaurant where you can let your kids run all night long.

I would have seconded and thirded Old Stone Farmhouse when Brian Katz cheffed there (and I did) but I've recently heard from several people that the portions have been reduced bigtime while the prices have jumped.

Brian's now Exec Chef at the new Yacht Haven complex and although only time will tell, seems like thus far he's doing a very good job there.

And I give a thumbs up to Romano's. Expensive, yes, but Tony's been on the block for a long time now and although I haven't been able to afford an evening at his place for many years now, I know from others that the quality of his food remains as constantly/consistently good as always and I never found his place to be in the least bit "pretentious."

Hey, Tony sometimes comes to MY place to eat and his chefs do now on a regular basis on their days off. But this post isn't about me and just about consumer preferences. My vote again, right now, is for Blue Moon, Banana Tree and Romano's.

Oh, and for a really good take-home dinner FOR CHEAP, check out Plaza Xtra in Tutu Park. On Wednesday those ladies in the back do a stew chicken which does me so well and is good for two servings at only $8 for a big plate of the chix, assorted steamed veggies and some sweet potato. I've also done their tuna macaroni, the stew pork and the stew beef.

The ladies back there are ladies after my own heart who obviously cook because they love to cook and come from the old school where simmering and time involved in it is an exercise which can't be taught but comes from the heart.

I've said enough so goodnight! And cheers too!

STX-
I agree with The Case Place - reasonable and good.

My favorite lunch spots - the coffee shop in Caravelle Arcade has great wraps and sandwiches
and Turtles Deli in F'sted (truly miss it in C-sted).

And we've never been disappointed with Breezez either.
