STX used to be considerably less expensive for buying gasoline than STT -- I paid $4.49 on STT on Saturday.

Not sure if it's affecting the islands but the extraordinarily cold, snowy winter has interrupted gas supplies and prices up north (mainland) are up about 5% from a couple of weeks ago.

Gas prices shoot up 30 cents or more on St. Croix

ST. CROIX - Motorists on St. Croix may have gotten sticker shock on Monday when they rolled into their favorite gas stations to fill up.

The retail price of gasoline, which at most stations had stayed steady in the $3.97 to $3.99 per gallon range for some time, had skyrocketed at some stations by 30 cents or more in less than 24 hours.

By Monday evening, many - if not most - stations across the island had raised their retail prices to $4.29 per gallon for regular gasoline. The price for premium had also shot up.

In STT, we haven't paid less than $4.589 for regular nor seen prices at less than $4.00 in ages so consider yourselves lucky!

When I got back to AZ Wednesday the prices here are $3.29
The stations in the USVI make much - much more than stateside stations.

]Under today's adjustments, independent gas station operators in the territory now are paying $3.44 per gallon for regular gasoline, $3.74 per gallon for premium gasoline, and $3.52 per gallon for diesel fuel when they buy their fuel wholesale at HOVENSA. Those prices include the 14-cents-per-gallon tax that the refinery collects for the government.

Markup if selling regular @ $4.27 is $.83/gallon - not $.70/gallon.

Hovensa has been making weekly adjustments to the rack rate so the next adjustment will be made effective tomorrow 3/10/14.

I live in Wadsworth, Ohio now and the price yesterday 3/8 at most stations was $3.61- $3.66/gallon for regular which is up about $.20/gallon during the past week.

I'm not a gas station owner, but I assume delivery is not free - it's 3.44 + a delivery charge? Is there also a tax on gasoline like in the states that should also be accounted for, or is gas tax free in the states? Do the stations also owe 6% gross receipts tax on gasoline sales (at 4.60 a gallon, that's 27-28 cents a gallon in gross receipts tax per gallon)?

$3.44/gallon does not include the freight and I don't know what it is currently but it was approx $.08/gallon 2yrs ago. Gross receipts taxes are figured on the sale price the station sells it for. In the states each state has it's own "tax rate" that is added into the price at the pump. So by the time the STX station owner pays freight, gross receipts tax, & WAPA electric bill - that a big bite out of their "margin". (Sell price to customer minus rack rate purchase price).

In today's 3/10/14 VI Daily News --

My 2cents - why bother.adjusting for a penny.

HOVENSA drops price of regular by 1¢

ST. CROIX - The wholesale price for regular gasoline inched downward today, while the wholesale rate for premium went up as HOVENSA adjusted its rack rates.

The changes will lower the rack rate - the price of fuel purchased wholesale at the HOVENSA truck-loading station on St. Croix - for regular gasoline by a penny per gallon and will raise the rack rate for premium gasoline by 7 cents per gallon. The wholesale price of diesel fuel did not change.

Under today's adjustments, independent gas station operators in the territory now are paying $3.43 per gallon for regular gasoline, $3.81 per gallon for premium gasoline, and $3.52 per gallon for diesel fuel when they buy their fuel wholesale at HOVENSA. Those prices include the 14-cents-per-gallon tax that the refinery collects for the government.
