Hey I'm planning on moving down to st. croix but i need to know what kind of work would be good for someone moving down there by themself. I'm 20yo and i really want to live the island life but i would like to have enough to live. Also i want to buy a one bedroom condo and i found some water front condos for some good prices would that be a good move to buy a condo instead of moving into an apartment? Thanks.

How much money do you have available for the move?

I moved with $7,000 in cash (to STT), and it was the perfect amount. Might be less for STX, as housing is cheaper there. And gasoline, too. I spent $750 for the first ten days at a B&B, then $900 for the next 30 days at the Mafolie Hotel, then $1,200 for a car worth $100 in Michigan ( but I still see it driving around the island! Haha!), $3,600 for my first last and security in an apartment and I ate and drank the rest. I ended up getting a job on my first day on the island, so I started gettiing income after about 3 weeks. $7K worked out perfect for me.

Have you decided on STX for specific reasons?

$5,000 is a good figure and St. Croix is a good choice. Make reservations at one of the inexpensive hotels on the island for a week or so. Rent a car for a week. Then start looking for an apartment and a job!! Finding a job will make the decision of where to live easier. Ask EVERYONE you meet if they know of any apartment or house sharing vacancies. You should be able to find something fairly quickly. If I were you, I'd plan to come NOW or wait until next October/November. It's the start of busy season and jobs are available.

Give us a call when you get here. We're old enough to be your parents, but we do have some young friends that can help you network.

With $5,000, I say go for it -- you're only young once!
