What a wondeful event.
Nice to see events like these in the USVI.
There are many nice events almost every weekend somewhere in the VI. People just assume there's nothing offered because they didn't get a personal, written, phoned, visited to tell them about it.
MS, REALLY? a bit uncalled for
Uncalled for how? I called out a very good friend who made a complaint about not having access to fresh produce on St Thomas, because she can't get to Market Square. I had to tell her that farmers' markets have expanded from just Market Square to Yacht Haven Grande and American Yacht Harbor because of demand. Both places offer parking and have big signs posted. I said the same thing to her.
Many volunteers work very hard to improve the quality of life here, and they get little recognition and few thanks. The least I can do is support as many as I can.
Imo, too often negative news and experiences are shared and overshadow much of the progress and good things that take place.

The V Dubs were actually really cool. I know one of the guys who owns one and I asked him how on earth he keeps it in such immaculate condition given the roads. "Very, very, very carefully," was the response.

Lol, I.T. I asked the same question on STT and got the same response. I think most only drive them for show on carefully selected roads. One let me be his passenger in a parade, and it was so much fun!
Love dem bugs!
That is why I posted this positive event. One, I think Volkswagen Beatles are cool. Two, to underscore uniqueness of an event that combined all the different things into one event. Three, because enough negative things are highlighted on this board I thought it might be cool to post this cool event. I didn't take offense to you post Ms411 but was kind of perplexed.
It wasn't directed at anybody in particular - just based on comments I hear from people every day. "Why didn't they advertise?" "I didn't hear it on the radio." "Nobody told me." "I don't get local tv news." Etc.
And relying on word of mouth is a waste of time. And forums reach a tiny percentage of the population.
People who don't try to inform themselves should lose their rights to complain or speak negatively, because many times they are wrong.
Off to chastise someone who didn't inform me... 🙂
Agreed.
lol, it seems you were justified in your rant against your friend
Of course I was justified. People who live here and try to ignore the current and real world both here, stateside, and worldwide really ire me.
I moved here because I missed the sense of community my parents had in a relatively small U.S. southern city that I did not appreciate until 20 years ago.
I try to support community as much as I can by voting, buying local, and going to local events. I make time almost every day to see what's going on.
I seldom post events online, because almost nobody should expect free advertising.
If people really want to know more about what it's like to live here they should buy the guides offered on this site and subscribe to both local newspapers.
Lots of things going on this month on STT! See you there!
well, i wish but thats a bit of a swim for me lol

All the more reason there should be regular ferry service between STT and STX.

It would be nice to do a much improved calendar of events here. I work a lot, so I don't pay a ton of attention (don't seek things out), but it would be nice to look at an actual calendar for the year.
there is a calendar of events, but i do not think it lists everything.
i so agree about the ferry service

There sort of is. We had a free city paper in Philly and the last page was always a calendar with what was happening every day. Not just a list, that people (I assume) pay to list events. The main events never seem to be included. I don't know how to say what I'm trying to explain.
I remember similar free papers in other major cities, and to some extent The Island Trader is the VI similar.
However, most newspapers rely on event submissions from the promoters to find out what's going on.
For many events on STT, promoters/sponsors seem to try to target notices based on either publications that are owned by people they know who support them, flyers/signs on the roadside because that's what they've done and know, facebook, flyers/signs at businesses they know. Oh, and of course local radio.
The VI community is very fragmented. I don't know of any media that can profitably appeal to all.
there's a stx events calendar at www.stcroixcalendar.com. I get periodic emails. Not always accurate or fully comprehensive, but not bad

Yeah, I only heard about the VW Beetle event because I ran into Whealan Massicott (who owns a GORGEOUS maroon VW Bug and runs IB Designs in C'sted) in a bar and he mentioned it to me. Would never have heard about it otherwise and I read all the local papers and message boards. The stuff in the Avis always seems to be about church events.

ETA: Anyone notice that "St. Croix this Week" is put out MONTHLY? Maybe if they produced it weekly we'd hear more about local events like this instead of the standard annual fare that everyone already knows about like the IM and Taste of STX.
The This Week publications aren't even published every month, at least not on St Thomas, and some of the info is not current. I brought it to her attention, but she ignored me probably because I'm not an advertiser.
I think non profits can post at either reduced or free rates whereas for profits have to pay ad rates so you see more of the church announcements. Also, the older demographic still reads newspaper whereas younger ones don't.
Advertising is very challenging in 21st century!
well, anyone who hears of events could post it in the community section of this forum
St Croix weekly is a monthly magazine, that other than changing it's cover, is the exact same magazine from two months.
I also think it is a good idea to post how great of a time one had at events because perhaps others might wish they would have gone and look for the event the following year.
