Whales
does anyone know when is the best time to see the whales on STT?
I've seen whales off the North Shore of STX several times. Usually in March.
The migration North to the Silver Banks off Hispaniola of the humpback whales is usually mid Jan. through mid March, often a mother and a calf - Both Drakes Passage and Pillsbury Sound are a common route -- north of JVD and STT they seem to slow down and wait for the pod to form, so often you can see multiple sightings on a flat day. When the wind and waves are up it is hard to spot the telltale spouting - from high up on the South side of STJ you can often spot them with binoculars. If you are boating, monitor channel 16 as the daysail and fishing vessels often announce any sightings. It is illegal to closely approach them by boat. DPNR also logs sightings so you might give them a call and ask.
Thanks for the info. We live on STT on east end above Smith Bay approx 650 ft up the mountain. We have a great view of JVD, the Cays and Honeymoon Bay on STJ. We see lots of things with our binoculars. We are hoping to see the whales, too.
That is a good vantage point - watch out and over towards Thatch Cay especially down towards the NW corner where it funnels into the Atlantic -- and Good Luck.
