Dear Chuck,
A gentle friendly hint. Have you researched this board yet?
I really think you should have taken the time to do that before buying tickets for you, girlfriend and dog for October 3rd (just days away!) when it seems from all your posts today that you don't have jobs or housing already set up.
If I missed something and you posted some time ago and have already done your research, then my humble apologies!
If I'm right, I'd like to humbly suggest that you leave the dog at home in the care of good and caring people and spend your money to do what is called a PMV - pre-move visit. If you research this forum you'll find out a whole lot about PMVs. A PMV will enable you to get a feel for island life and see what might be available for work and housing for you both and for the dog!
Coming here totally blind is a very, very bad idea indeed.
I'm sure you know that your dog has to have a vet certificate for travel and has to be all up to date on shots, etc? There's lots of information on this board on that subject.
Good luck to you!
STT Resident is 100% right.
Leave your dog home (the plane ride is stressful- and airlines may or may not let you fly with a pup, given the weather out).
Do some research. Come with way more money than you think you might need.
Be prepared. A lot of people come to "paradise" and are sorely disappointed!
Best,
LR
Chuck,
I hope you come a lot more prepared. This isn't a great crash and learn place. Many have come blindly and have been taken advantage of, robbed, or worse.
Now that we have totally burst your bubble. I do wish you luck, I second the advice of leaving your dog behind, and hopefully you can treat this as your PMV. There are many jobs in bartending, serving, etc., but if you go looking for a job without a health card, you will not get a job serving. That is just one example of some information you need to know. Sorry to be harsh, but it is reality. Again good luck.
Teresa
Thanks, Teresa and Loyal Reader (and Island Ed via PM!)
I was really more concerned about the dog than Chuck and his mate! You both seconded very well indeed and, Chuck, I hope you've kept your options open and have had a chance to read the suggestions offered in response to your questions, although I very much fear that with only a few days to go, you just might not be logging onto this site to receive these responses.
Of course we all wish you a safe and uneventful trip here and wish you all the best.
Chuck,
Don't be discouraged. Me and my girlfriend moved here on the first of September w/ out a PMV. We have jobs, a car, and a place to live. If you are a strong person, you will make it work. Good luck.
Gary
